Help!
My new baby won't start now.

I had it running a few weeks ago...although it had some old stale gas in it from the guy I bought it from...which was drained and replaced with new fuel and ran for at least 30 min. It was running fine when I parked it.

Now...the bugger won't start. It turns over, coughs & backfires occasionally.

I know...check the carbs, plugs. What would you suggest 1st?

Is there a link on how to clean carbs with simple tips or shall I hit the manual (RTFM style) ?

When you drained the gas did you drain the floatbowls??? If not, you probably have a lot of water in them even though you ran it for 30min.

Also, sometimes the floatbowls drain and it is hard to get the fuel pumps to work without using some starting fluid.


Is it firing at all, even a chuga chuga?

I would check the choke lever. I have on occasion left the choke on and take off running. I would shut the engine down and upon trying to restart no start.

I would guess Plugs. I had this problem a few years back. Changed plugs and it ran fine. Might be something else but I would check plugs 1st.

I agree......Make sure ALL the old stale gas is out of the carb and change the plugs and I'll bet she'll fire right up!

Alrighty...sounds like plugs 1st. I was thinking that too since they've been abused by old fuel.

I'm planning on changing the oil too before I start riding it alot so I'll have a look at the carbs then.

pressurize the gas tank to prime the fuel pump (blow in the vent hose), or squirt a bit of gas in the carbs, or i even used a bit of propane to start mine (do it at your own risk)

New plugs. Started right up.
Great sled for the 1st ride on it last night.

The thing has a bit of a rough running spot at 1/4 throttle and slowing. I'm betting that's not normal. Carb cleaning one of these days.

sync the carbs and I bet that rough spot goes away.

I would clean the carbs good and if you just bought it, you may have to adjust needle depth to take care of the 0-1/4 throttle problem if you are at a different elevation than it is use to. Good luck!

Rx's were hard on plugs, particularly if you let them idle in the garage. Dealer told me not to do that but guys wanted to hear the exhaust and would run it for a few then shut it down. this is hard on the plugs.

Once you change them out, take a torch and heat them red hot. they should be good to go when your buddy comes over and wants to hear it run again and you go thru this the next time.

I am glad to see the plugs fixed the problem. I agree w/ Pro116 about syncing carbs. That should help w/the 0-1/4 throttle roughness.
