XP vs Nytro

If it were me and I was going to purchase a sled just for jumping, running bumps and even ramps, I'd buy a used, plain jane XP with a carb'd , series III 600 (the 500SS motor) and install race sled braces and the most expensive shocks you could afford.

The original series III 600 is the most reliable liquid cooled 2-stroke motor Doo makes and the X, XRS and whatever else packages are a waste of money if you are actually going to ride and use the sled like a racer.

Actually Doo dicked with the 500ss and made it very unreliable when it went into the XP.

Not really. In '08 they leaned it out too much in the mid range in an attempt to clean up the emissions and some guys experienced burn downs that were covered under warranty. An update was issued and revised jetting took care of the problem.

Lean midrange burn down.....?????

I love my 4stroke sleds :)

There was a little more to it then that. A base gasket change was also included and I though maybe a ECU re-flash.

100% of the 500ss in our group burnt down at least once. (and that was in the Rev chassis)

You shouldn't be able to buy a 2011 X package sled from your dealer. They are only supposed to be snow checked in the spring. That's Doo's incentive to get you to buy a new sled when the snow is melting.

IMO, I wouldn't go back to a 600. I know the Nytro is a 600 class sled, but it shouldn't be pull wise. On regular trail riding, the 600 will have plenty of pull corner to corner, so you'll have to judge how you ride.

As far as the XRS package, a lot of non-snow cross and some people who think they are snow crossers but ride mainly trail, complain that the KYB40 shocks are too stiff for them. Those shocks are really meant for 25 foot jumps, not 3-6 foot I almost #$%&* myself kind of riders. Plus it adds almost $2000 to the sled. That's alot of clutching, studs, fuel programmers, riding gear, or what ever.

As stated, the xp xrs sleds are actually supposed to be a pretty good riding sled, not as stiff as the first xrs' they released. Its not a race sled anymore than the rtx se is a race sled. The x package is a better trail sled, it sits lower with a little softer suspension so it corners better, and probably rides better in most situations. Plus a less aggressive approach angle on the rear suspension rails gives it more top end also. And I believe it is 25 pounds lighter than the xrs.
