The black stuff in my coolant bottle is the stuff thats flaking off the headgasket but why? Should I try to find a copper gasket ? Also , whats the best way to take this crap off of my head and block ?

Yes it is coming from the head gasket, could be a leaking head gasket. I had a head gasket failure last yeat due to not enough tork on the head studs at head install, coolant became full of small black pieces from the head gasket.

Gasket remover works well, spray on, wait, wipe off. Repeat until clean.

carburater cleaner works good too, wipe surfaces with acytone befor install and take care not to touch gaskets or surfaces, spray gaskets with copper coat let dry and install, shouldn,t have any problems with sealing or blowing gaskets, tork properly.

Mine did this too (BUT) i had the black stuff in the bootle right after frist start up. Sled saw no boost, so i know it was from cleaning the old gasket off the block-head. I dont lose and coolant and sled Ripppps!! :) I did a block test last week and have no exhaust gasses in the cooling system. So i am good. When did the black stuff show up? Right after doing the head gasket??

I did the stock Yamaha specs right from the RX-1 Service Manual, my mistake, shoud have read the MXCpress install guide more often during assembly.

My coolant was clean as I washed down everything prior to the install, I had everything apart so I took my time washing the coolant system too. When the gasket blew and I lost cooland out the over flow, I could tell right away that the gasket was shot by all the black stuff floating around in my remaining coolant.

Skydog - I think you are safe, cause you have never lost any coolant.

I am in Toronto and have a NEW stock head gasket in package still FOR SALE....

I rode the sled all season and lost coolant under hi boost only.I'm installing ARP studs and following Ted Jannety's torque specs. I plan on installing billet t's as well.

I know lots of sleds that push coolant out the over flow under higher boost (12-15psi)
Mine did it with the stock head gasket. Maybe like 1/2 qt in 1500-2000 miles.

Yea and i guess i should say once it got down to the lower level in the bottle it would stop.

I keep mine in the lower level as well, heat expansion will cause it to overflow if the level is too high. good point. don,t fill it up.

Snowy1, do you have billet carb caps on yours ? How about carb T's ? Thats going to be my next investment.
