0-20W Synthetic, is it safe?

I did a few searches but did not fing out what I was looking for.

Have any of you been running 0-20w synthetic in you Apex's, and do you think it is safe?
Any overheating issues?

I doubt you would have any issues, but why 0-20 instead of 0-30 or 0-40? It's a less protective oil.

Trying to squeeze out more performance?

I run the 0-30 Mobil 1 from Walmart

I have been running 0-20w mobil 1 for 5000+mi in my sled with no worries!

Prob no worries (especially b/c is synthetic), but unless you just have a case of 0w20 lying around you need to use up, why not just procure the recommended weight oil? To me 0w20 weight oil seems awfully thin for such a high rpm-ing motor. I actually use 0w40 weight Amsoil myself -- engineered for these types of toys. Not saying that's the best, but a little heavier weight...... JMO

But it will prob start easier on those freezing cold days up there in the frozen tundra of Manitoba with that light weight oil!

Typically, the thinner the oil, the more power you get out of it due to fluid dynamics, etc., BUT, the more oil you will consume since it is more easily atomized and blown out the vent.

In simple terms, when talking about 0-20w, or 20-40, or any mutigrade as I understand it, the motor is going to be starting with the oil at the first viscosity rating, and once up to temp, is protected by the second number.

OW40 Amsoil in all our 4 stroke sleds (8) in our group , since 2004 NO ISSUES !
No oil burn , good cold starts !

This is right. FYI, I was just lending a hand of support to the gentlemen who was asking about 0W20 oil.

I understand 0W20 cold is similar to 0W40 on cold starts.

I know a thing or 2 about oil.........

In theory there would be some HP gain. Ulmer has claimed dyno increases with 0-20 Gibbs oil & increase in RPM. KNAPP claims he once switched to 0-40 & the sled was a dog until he switched back to 0-30. I've run Gibbs & Mobil 0-20 for 5000 fast & hard miles with no issues, but a friend with 30,000 miles on RX-1 had to switch to 10-40 so he doesn't burn as much oil like LAZYBASTERD said thinner oil could do. Just some extra tidbits...

I would also think the Apex would "ingest" 0W20 oil pretty fast at high RPMs........ JMO, but I like a heavier weight oil for those long, pounding hand on the throttle all day long kinda rides.

But OW20 syn oil is gonna protect your motor, for sure. Not sure I'd use it though, unless I could check the oil level often (which is sort of a PITA on the Apex on the trailside, right!!!!).

I like the way LB described it as "atomizing" fast and escaping out the vent, makes a lot of sense!

Have run Apex motors on straight 0 weight! A good 0-20 will pick up 3 hp and the straight 0 weight picked up 6-7 in our application!

thats why i run 0-20w in sled because you get a little more hp,if you guys have Y.E.S drive the crap out of it and have fun!! like i said above no worries, ins or not. i run heavier weight in the streetbike because i am always >>WRINGING ITS NECK<< 15,000rpm+/-

You heard it straight from Ulmer's mouth, one of the most trusted on this sight. I personally don't burn any oil, but i do get some blow through on my air cleaner, but i'm not sure if it's more than normal...

Hands down, lighter weight oil such as 0-20 makes more power than heavier. Oil analysis I've done shows no more wear with 20 than 30 weight. If you really want to slow it down, loose HP fuel mileage and get beat by your friends, then go ahead and feel free to run 40 wt.
