In the book it says to run 0-30 semi. It was my belief that the 0-40 full synthetic oil was the superior oil to run.

Is there any reason to run the semi synthetic over full?

Thanks guys.

The manual that came with it.

I just got done a rebuild on my buddy's nytro 20000 Kms of abuse, water pump failure.
After seeing the condition of the bearings liners and Pistons, I'm impressed with full synthetic that's for sure.

I know here in Canada Yamaha recommends not using full synthetic until 3000-3500 kms, by using 0w30 it allows for the engine to run in properly ie: the rings to seat to the cylinders, the synthetic doesn't allow that to happen due the properties of the oil! Even though the 0w30 is a semi, it still has a mineral base which aids in engine break in. This was passed on to me by a former Yamaha tech, there was a tech tip bulletin from Yamaha. cheers!

Amsoil 0-40 is all I run in my 4 strokes. I'm a true believer that Amsoil is the best on the market. I had a 2001 Polaris Edge 600 that had just under 10000 miles on it when I sold it. I owned that sled since about 2000 miles and ran nothing but Amsoil products through it and I'm almost certain that is the reason I got that many miles out of a 2 stroke.

Two stroke is a little different, a lot less moving parts in the engine 2 pistons, two cylinders and a crank, 4 stroke a whole lot of moving parts. So takes a little longer for components to break in. Also they are assembled at tighter tolerances, right down to the number of rings the piston has 4 strokes having at least 3, whereas the skidoo etec for example has only one. So yes run the ow30 semi longer and switch to the synthetic that meets the api service stated in the owners manual and you will have many years of trouble free riding. The engine oil is the blood of the engine sort of speak! cheers!

One note, also beware that some synthetics are not compatible with the wet starter clutch on all Yamaha four strokes, that's why you should use oils that meet the api service stated in the manual!

I completely agree with you. I was just stating that I think the quality is top notch and thats the reason I go that many miles out of 2 stroke. I just started to run 0-40 after last year when I checked when it (0-30Semi at the time) was -30F out and it looked really really thick. The 0-40 I use is good down to -60F. Just trying to help the machine out a little when its bitterly cold out.

Off topic a touch. I always wondered....what does semi mean? most assume 50/50.

Could mean a 10 to 1 or 100 to 1 or something worse....

Technically speaking, this isn't a super high strung motor running on the edge. Its running relatively low boost pressures and rpms. You can run any oil you want. If you never change the oil in the sled ever, the engine will likely out last the chassis. I wouldn't recommend you try this out, but just saying.

Either way, run what makes you happy and gives you peace of mind.
