I have a 02 grizzly 660 here, yesturday I had it in 4wd low and was pulling another 660 out of mud hole in reverse he hit a stump and all of a sudden there was a loud clunk and now no 4wd it sounds like it is spinning or chewed up the spline on the shaft that goes into the motor from the front diff. Is this big job too take it off and change or is this a job for the stealership I do all the basic mainitance on the bikes so anyone can help I an get the job done And I do have donor bike that I can get the part from

Thanks Andy ;)!

well i have done the job on a 92 big bear.

1st you need to remove the skid/bash plate if it has one. next you will need to remove the drive shaft gaurd completely. next you have to remove the u-joint at the transfercase end. the shaft then slides apart and you can check the splines in the slip yoke. make shure you do not loose the spring or washers that are on the slip. then you can unbolt the yoke from the front diff and remove the rest of the shaft. if the shaft is fine, you will need to pull the front diff as the problem is in there. never had one apart with selectable 4x4 so this is the best guideance i can give you atm.

With the front wheels off the ground, put it into neutral and four wheel drive lock. You should not be able to spin the front wheels and if they do watch the front drive shaft. If it's spinning then the middle shaft (11) is broke. From what you've described it sounds like it did. The shaft drives both front and rear wheels and is driven by a pinion gear (8) inside the motor. The front portion of the shaft splines into the drive gear so it's possible to strip the splines or brake the shaft and still have rear wheel spin. I believe you can pull the shaft out through the front. The front drive shaft and yoke need to be removed then a snap ring and left hand threaded retaining nut (10) removed. You may have to remove the rear shaft and pinion gear also. The pinion gear should slide out of the rear with the bearing and seal housing (6).
