I just bought a slightly used (187 miles)2003 RX-1 this week and the first thing I have noticed is an idle rattle from the primary clutch. In a resent post there was some info on a Yamaha clutch upgrade that was done under warranty to help out this issue. My sled is now out of warranty and I am wanting to find out the part number for this clutch fix kit and is it available for purchase?
This is a great site, I can see I will be here on a regular basis!
Thank you
Kevin

Its not an issue. Thats a perfectly normal rattle that you can't get rid of without changing to the 04 CRANKSHAFT and PTO gear. Has nothing to do with the clutch.

So this clutch upgrade never exsisted?

KEVINC, I believe you are hearing the gearbox making the rattle noise. The 04's changed the gearing to eliminate much of the backlash. If you increase your idle slightly it should be less noticeable

It exists, it's in my '03 Blue RX-1, not much noise from primary after the upgrade. My dealer installerd it for free, so I assume it is a warranty issue. If not I guess it will cost u a few buck. Ask your dealer.

Clutch Upgrade?
LB is right. It has nothing to do with the clutch. It is in the gear reduction box. They improved the gear tolerance on the 04's to eliminate the noise. As far as the clutch goes, there is no difference between 03 & 04 on the shorty.

To get rid of the gear noise would cost big bucks and is NOT an update from Yamaha.

What are you talking about? There was never an upgrade. There wasn't anything wrong with the clutch.........................

rxrider,
I believe you when you say you found at least a partial cure for the rattle coming from the left front of the sled. However I was down at my local Yamaha dealer last Friday night and showed them your post on the adding metal shims in the clutch and they could not find anything about it in their bulletins. The lead tech said he was aware that Polaris offered some shims for some of their sleds that quieted down some mechanical chatter.
Can you check with the tech who did your RX-1 and report back to us whether its a Yamaha upgrade or just a cure an astute tech came up with by adapting a fix from a different manufacturer If you could provide specific information and part number that would be great.
There are hundreds of RX-1 owners who would love to reduce the clatter coming from the sled at idle.

I will check with both dealer and their techs to find out where they got this update from. I haven't found it either on any parts catalogues on the net. Will talk to them tomorrow and post asap.

Talked to dealer today. This shim for the primary is not a warranty issue nor is it an update. Parts are coming from a '94 VMAX 500, partno. 8BW-17654-20-00[/list]

My 04 shorty has almost 500km on it and the primary clutch at idle is annoyingly loud. For these kind of bucks Yamaha has demanded for these sleds, they could make it quieter. Sounds like shes gonna blow!!!

The rattle I had in my primary made me think of skidoo tra's. Horrible rattle, but they are supposed to be like that. My primary is very quiet now, reduction gear is not.
