Guys,
Need some help. Vector died on my first ride this year . Symptoms appear to be a charging issue. Wouldn't start and lights were real dim, dash stopped working, handlebar warmers same. Able to limp it back to camp. I repaced battery since I was up in Land-O-Lakes and wanted to get it going. Battery was original with 6k miles on it. Ran for a while fine then when I went to start it after a dinner stop, she was dead again. Got it jumped and limped it back to camp and left it charge overnight on a trickle charger (battery tender). In the AM she started fine but died on the trail a couple miles out. Started checking electrical system. I think it is bad stator. Here is what I have so far. Battery Fully Charged O.C.V = 13.11 V. Running at 1500 RPM V=12.27. Running at 5000 RPM V=12.27. No change in voltage. Checked Stator Resistance looks to be out of spec. Ohm=0.4 to 0.8. Should be 0.22 to 0.26. I also checked the VAC from the stator and it appears to be about 2.7 VAC at idle and goes to about 5-6 VAC at about 5k RPM. I think it should be about 30-40 VAC when meaasured W-W or W-GND? Anything else I should check before I tear it down? Does the engine need to come out or can I losen motor mounts to get at the stator cover to pull the rotor? Search of the posts sounds like this is what it probably is and how to fix it. Before I do that just wanted to ask the pros. Thanks for any input.

Bad Stator. You may have to pull the engine to get at it.

Thanks for the feed back. I was afraid of that, I'll try removing motor mounts first to get at it, if not then I'll remove it. I'll ask dealer what he would charge to do it, but since I have more time on my hands than money sounds like a good job for me and my other unemployed buddy. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you.

The Buddy will come in handy when you try to lift the engine out. ;-)

Done.. Didn't have to pull engine thankfully, just lossen the motor mounts, pull out rear mount and tilted it forward enough to clear frame to get cover off. Back running again and looking at the old stator, it has some burn marks were the wire comes out of the coils. Vibration maybe caused it to rub off coating and short maybe. New coil looks to be reinforced in that area now. Be nice if yammie covered the costs of new part $309, but dealer said no luck out of warranty.

Thanks for following up. Good to know you can just tip the engine forward and get at the stator. Enjoy!
