Hi All, Happy New Year,
I tried to replace the wheels myself because I did'ny want to be without a sled for too long. I removed the wheels and was getting ready to drill my track for studs when I saw it.............a cut in the track from rubbing the Ohlins shock. It is a tear in the inside of the track, perfectlty centered it is about two inches long, 1/2 inch wide "Channel" for the lack of a better word running about 2/3rds the way through the track from the inside. I can deal with bad idlers....No Big Deal. But when I drove three hours to drop my sled off and have it fixed they first told me that I rode on "marginal snow conditions causing my Hyfax to melt, never mind about the wheels that are chewed??? I might have made a couple of passes on a lake with not much snow but only like 2 miles or so??? Then I showed the service tech the cut track. He has the balls to say " hey look at this, See where the shock is rubbing on the track there........What do you want me to do redesign the sled?? Thats Yamaha's problem" I did all I could do not to rip his head off his shoulders. They are going to call Yamaha on Tuesday, until the, I might be a little short tempered. The hand warmers are lame, the wheels self destruct, Track hitting the shock...............WTF

Hummmm I will have to take a look at mine today, while i'm changing my wheels. I have 230 miles on my GT and haven't checked the track for adjustment. I was planning on doing that after my trip. I wonder if a loose track could cause it to hit and rub?

Wouldn't it have been a good idea for Yamaha to have used the same set-up on the Apex as they did on the Attak, with the "slider" mounted next to the shock mount on the rear of the mono shock to keep the track from contacting the rear shock mount?
Has anyone come up with a way to add something like that to an Apex?

I'm trying to understand how the shock can only rub the track for 2 inches and not all the way around? At least that's how I'm understanding it. Is there any evidence of it rubbing all the way around? The upper idler wheels should keep the track off the shock. I can see maybe making it shiney. I had my shock out with 500 miles on it and there wasn't a mark on it and I run my track pretty loose. But even a loose track shouldn't cause the shock to rub because of the upper idlers.

Make sure you take your sled to the dealer and get the problem registered!!!

There are marks from the shock all over the entire track, inside middle every couple of inches. the tear is the size of the "rub" marks on the pictures from "ba apex's" sled except instead of a rub, it ripped, or gouged a channel 1/2" wide, two inches long, and peeled it up, not ripping off at the end, only leaving a flap there 1/2" wide, two inces long, sticking up 3/4 of an inch. I want to stud, obviously I'll leave the middle studless, but I'm afraid the tear will grenade my track at 100+.

I saw this posted earlier and checked mine and had my dealer check it as well, No rubbing at all on mine but i think over tightening the track will cause this more than a loose track because the track sag's between the two upper rear ideler wheel's. I have 1" plus gap between the shock and track and you would think at speed it would only get farther away. Frome what i saw on mine this does not make sense.

My track tension is PERFECT. At 100 mile it is RUBBING.

I dont blame you larry,that is unexceptable yammi should stand be hind you on this 100% get another dealers opinion or just get to another dealer period,that should be taken care off,and the fact that you have not even studded yet,shows it is all yamahas problem..badlarry said:

One time last year I was messing around with the weight transfer rod and I turned it up to max and the top of the shock started to rub on the inside of the track I turned the weight transfer down and the track clears.

badlarry sounds like your dealer isnt being too proactive. Call yammie and find yourself a good dealer.

Hey badlarry, what, if anything, has Yamaha done for you regarding this problem?

Where do you have your weight transfer set at? Mine is in the stock setting and have had some rubbing, nothing serious yet.
Yamaha Rep says to keep track tension within the factory specs as too loose could cause it-I'm not sure on that.
