Looking for ideas, or experiences. I'm out of warranty, and want to see what this is gonna set me back if it has to go to dealer. 1400 miles and here's my first problem. :o|

Hopefully its the starter otherwise it sounds like oneway bearing failure or starter clutch. Our starters dont have a Bendix.Starter is always engaged.I would start by removing the starter which is real easy if you remove the front frame. Is a sticky on procedure located at begining of the Phazer forum. When you get that far let us know.

starter caseing bolts loosen up spinning it and make the magnets go out of allignment making the starter spin backwards. pull it out realign and reinstall. Good luck.

Is there a reason why this happens? Or is it a rare default

The starter is kind of a goofy design where the back half of the starter isn't bolted to anything, and the only things holding the starter together are the two long bolts. Simply removing the bolts (one at a time so that the starter doesn't de-index) and applying locktite should hopefully keep this from happening. I did mine last year while I had everything apart and it had already started to de-index a bit (it was out of alignment by just under 1/8th inch).

If they designed it so that both halves had a bolt holding it to the engine this might not happen.

X2
LACK OF LOCTITE FROM FACTORY
Is a green line on the body and little protrusions on the ends.Line them up and should be good unless starter bolts really backed out far.

THANK YOU YAMAHA BRETHREN! Loose starter bolts, magnets out of align, starter spinning backwards. It's all set now. :rocks: I really appreciate the pics, info, and time everyone puts in, to make this site what it is. I'm so glad this was a reasonable fix. I was dreading the possible one way bearing/starter clutch ordeal and an expensive trip to the dealer. I'm gonna go do a snow dance now. ;)!

the starter actually looks the same as the one that was on my old warrior atv.. that thing use to come apart on me all the time..

Got ya beat rucus... mine was apart number 20,21,and 22 this month

So what happens when you can't see that green line, or it's gone? I didn't know what I was doing and spun the two ends without knowing that the alignment would be fubared.

Advice?

There should be a line. It could be very faint but it should there Don't clean it with brake cleaner or some other strong solvent as it could remove it.
