Well the title says it. I only want to change the oil this year. I'll leave the filter.
How much oil do I need?

this is fine.....i hear so so many guys always say they are changing filter everytime....this is NOT NEEDED.

most guys dont put on nearly enough miles to need a filter change each time....

a OIL change is much easier as we know, and its not about cheaping out or wanting to save time....its just common sense, filters last alot longer then a couple thousand miles. Only time i would change sooner is if you change from mineral to synthetics.

for me....i go to walmart, buy a 5 quart JUG of mobile 1 for 22 bucks(5w-20 or 5w-30 or 5w-40) and then you got some leftover....the jugs have a nice GAUGE on the back side,to judge how much you are putting into sled....

after you drain motor and oil tank.....you should add about 2 quarts, then start motor and let it circulate oil into motor....then add to where level is correct on dipstick WITHOUT screwing it down....be sure motor is warm(heat exchangers warm under footboards) when topping off level on dipstick.

1. If I am switching to Synthetic from stock Yamalube, do I need to change the filter?

2. How do I get ALL the oil out of the engine before the switch to synthetic? Just drain it like a normal oil change?

first off, todays synthetics are fine to mix with minerals, most all synth manufacturers will tell you this.

that being said,i would still not MIX them(im OCD).....you just need to simply drain the oil, remove the filter....and then go with synthetic oil.

if you leave the filter in place, you will have a small amt of original oil in motor, probably wont hurt a thing but if it were me id change filter at this time.

BTW original yamalube was a SEMI SYNTH BLEND,while the NEWEST YAMALUBE is FULL SYNTH.

for best protection most guys here like amsoil 0w40 powersports oil....for some of us we like a lighter oil for more HP and top speed. in this case you want to go with a race oil like the amsoil dominator 5w20 which has lots of zinc, unlike a automotive oil in 20 weight.

1. IMO, no. Best practices maybe, but Yammi filters last a long, long time. If you put a cheapo one in there it won't last as long. The oils themselves will mix just fine.

2. You cannot get it all out. All you can drain is what'll come out of the 2 oil drain plugs (1 on bottom of motor, other on bottom of overflow)...... There will always be residual oil (maybe up to a 1/3 of a quart or more) in the engine you can't drain from those two drain areas.
