I bought my first nytro about a month ago. It had been sitting at a dealer for over a year. When I bought it it was sitting in a warm shop and started fine, not the smoothest idle after being started but it didn't seem too bad. When I got it home I drained all the old gas and put fresh in it. It was sitting outside for about a week and I went to start it in -20 C (-5 F) and it had trouble starting. It cranked over for about 6-7 seconds and then started and died. Tried again and it started but sounded really rough, with some backfiring, it was idleing at about 2500 rpm. Once the sled warmed up it ran perfect and idled good at about 1500 rpm.
This week I put some seafoam in the gas, changed the plugs, and bypassed the tors system. Took it for a 40 mile ride yesterday and it ran good during the ride but when I went to start it this morning it still didn't start good. Took 5 seconds of cranking to start then died. Started back up and ran rough until it was warmed up (no backfiring this time though). I pulled the plugs and they looked a little black and sooty. I don't understand how it could have fouled the plugs that fast? I let it warm up properly before I move the sled at all.
Any ideas on what I should be checking for? Oh and the sled only has 2200 miles on it. Thanks

I don't have a lot of experience in this since I just bought my Nytro over the summer but will share what I do know with you.
I haven't had any real cold starts to test mine yet however I do know that when you start it (~30F is the coldest I've had so far), it will idle around 2300-2400rpm while the little red warning light is on. This is telling you the water temp isn't high enough yet and it is not warmed up. I have been told by many people not to touch the throttle at all until this light goes off as you will tend to foul plugs and lead to as you said backfiring and rough running just like a 2 stroke with dirty plugs. Once it warms up and the light comes of the idle will drop to around ~1500rpm which is where it should be according to the service manual. As I said I haven't had the chance to have any crazy cold temps like you to see how it does starting in them but so far on the stand as long as I give it plenty of time to warm up it never hiccups or sounds rough at all, the idle/warm up variations and roughness are almost identical to my 07 silverado so I feel this is completely normal

Just went through the same experience..only mine would not start..just a cannon like backfire. Pulled the plugs and they were fouled..put new ones in and runs like a dream again. I'm pretty sure I gave it too much throttle before it was warmed up ...I won't be doing that again. It was -20c when this happened..lesson learned.

Thank you for the replys. I was also thinking it sounded like a plug problem, but I can't figure out how it fouled a brand new set of plugs basically the first time it was started. I let the red light go off before I touch the throttle, Maybe I should let it warm up a bit longer than that? I'm going to try buying the CR10EK plugs and see if that solves my problem.

Ya a Yamaha mechanic told me that alot of times guys will start up their sleds to show their buddies how it sounds, give it a couple of blips on the throttle and shut it off. He said that this is hard on the plugs, and that could have been happening at your dealer, just showing people how the sled sounds.

I believe that is a common cause of fouled plugs on these sleds, but I let it warm up properly before I even touched the throttle on the new set of plugs and it still fouled them. Any other ideas of what caused my plugs to foul before I risk tossing another $20 set of plugs in the trash?

I just had this on my sled, I changed out the starter solenoid and fixed it. The old one was corroded inside.
