This problem started last year. Random slow cranks, doesn't seem to matter if the engine is hot or cold. I replaced the battery. Battery is charged and checks out fine. Charging system on sled seems to be fine. Tried a different battery anyway, still had the problem.

Did the 09's still have the issue with the starters? What should I try next? Connections to battery seem fine.

What is the emergency procedure for starting if you get stuck with no starter?

If you're talking about the starter body bolts, maybe but for sure 2007 had that problem. Not sure when it was fixed by Yamaha. Worth it to take it out and check it to be sure. Check the FAQ for instructions on fixing it.

Video on pull starting, basically the same as a two stroke:

This is both a suggestion as to what might be up and a question to those with more experience. I'm thinking a slipping starter clutch might result in intermittent slow cranking. It may be indicated if you have used a regular automotive oil.

Here is a link to a starter problem that I read recently but it doesn't fit your description. Thanks for the video Mooseman, one more item for the trail tool kit. Good thing these sleds can haul some freight.

I have run only Yamaha semi synthetic 0w40 through the sled.

As for the emergency pull start video, it really doesn't show how they got the cord started on the fly wheel. How do they hook it in and yet make sure it comes off freely? Looks a little dangerous.

It's just looped onto itself. Strap is supposedly easier. My son was doing it a whole weekend when his battery wouldn't hold enough of a charge to crank it. Even started stone cold.

For the oil, the only thing that is cautioned against in the manual is using "energy conserving" type oil. I have been using Mobil1 0w40 European formula, no issues in 14,000 Km. Oh and I also Loctited my starter bolts soon after I bought the sled.
