I was told that there was enough clearance with the standard tunnel protectors to use 1.4" studs. Is this correct? How do you tell being that Yamaha discourages studding (yet they sell them with protectors
installed)?

All sled manufactures dont want you to use studs!
I would use 1.375 as the max length for studs... YOu can use 1.40s but keep the track very tight or add some 1/4 thick alumium strips to the original tunnel protectors!

It also depends upon what brand of stud you are using. For example an Extreme Max 1.40 is the exact same length as a Woody's 1.325. Each stud manufacturer measures differently. Use the stud manufacturer's recommendation for your tracks lug height.
