Here it is. One Crazy Dude's 10,000 mile report.
I had a whole essay written up, but it was long winded, all facts & NO humor.
It was more like listening to an Edith Bunker story while smokin' a fatty.
Now some people read my stuff because they find it informative.
Some like my twisted '80's humor.
Some think i'm an idiot, and they wouldn't be wrong, but DO understand..............I RIDE! I ride hard & a lot!
AND..............i break stuff. Which means if something works for me, it works.

Me & the big Purple girl (no not Violet Beauregard) made it to 10,000 miles! Unfortunately, i put on another 1000 miles on a another girl. NO that's NOT why i got divorced!
I will go through the trials & tribulations of this "marriage" in this story.
I can tell you from the bottom of my heart.....I'M IN LOVE! We now have a symbiotic relationship.
When i say come out of this corner & smoke Johnny KLIM Yellow Pants then take that corner at 2 g's with bumps, SHE DOES IT! I've always thought my sled was a boy, but because of our "disagreements" i'm now sure it's a girl. Maybe it's one of those Cross Gender Transtesticals that are all the fashion these days. I'm still in LOVE!

It took me 8000 miles to get this beast dialed in, but the last 2000 were AMAZING!
Power, clutching, belt life, steering & suspension are about as good as i can get for MY area & style of riding.
I will post individual threads on fixes & set ups later. This year i hope to get my chain case more reliable even though i had NO issues with it.

Let's step back in time shall we? The year was 2016. My Apex was dependable, but it was time.
I wanted a 4-stroke with 150ish HP. The Winder was the only sled to fit the bill. I was reluctant to buy an Arctic Cat knowing, from just pure observation, they were the least dependable of the 4 bigs.
Now before our Cat friends get their panties all bound up, i will be paying homage to the Cat. I've had as many Yamaha issues and some were my own doing.

I've NOW come to realize that i had a TON of issues on my first Apex.
It took Totallyamaha & the realization that with BIG miles comes BIG maintenance.
Being a first year sled & having NO Procross experience i was behind the 8 ball.

YEAR 1: 2200 miles "Freshman 15"
-2 Turbo bolts broke when i first went to tighten my chain
-Secondary rollers went flat first ride
-Primary spring broke & wasn't available so the 'Ole Crusty Lonn from ThunderProducts hooked me up
-Multiple GRENADED belts
-Coolant was low a few times & over-heated easily
-I was pitched from sled because not enough traction
-New skis 'cuz stock ones suck
ALL in ALL it was a fast machine that was exponentially better on bumps then my Old Apex, but i still had more confidence on the Old Girl.

YEAR 2: 4200 miles "The Year of the CAT"
-Put 96 studs in stock track
-Installed J&P 4 wheel kit
-Lots of $$$$ on clutching & belts. Spent the year trying to figure problems out
-Broke the front sway bar in half
-COMPLETELY folded the tunnel. YEAR OVER! Easily could have had 2000 more miles!
ALL in ALL it was a good year for learning. I realized the good suspension made me hit bumps even harder & faster. I was SUPPOSED to have the RR parts in rear & that cost me.
I was still more confident on the Old Apex.

YEAR 2.5: "Summer Time Blues"
-Tunnel was completely replaced by Yamaha under warranty. Took all summer.
-RR parts in rear
-I sent all 4 shocks to Hygear because front rear spring was broken anyways
-Chain was junk & had it replaced when work was done
-Installed TD PowerTrail
-Hurricane clutch tool
-Clutch weights & rear spring
-Vents

YEAR 3A: 1600 miles "The Fixx"
-Put Art, Mike & SteveOOO on speed dial. I would need emotional help!
-Broke my secondary rollers
-Broke my primary clutch that sent shrapnel through the tunnel taking out secondary
-Lost my coolant via the tunnel hose
ALL in ALL the first half was very good with multiple adjustments to suspension & clutch work finally dialed in. I almost traded it in for a 850 or even a 600. Deal fell through.

YEAR 3B: 2000 miles "Ecclesiasites 7:8-18"
I put SnoTtrackers on Stock skis and BAMM! The transformation is complete. Re-adjusted my complete set up & attitude towards Cat & Yamaha.
PERFECTO!!!!

CONCLUSION:

My clutching is spot on & it shows with very good belt life. (report coming later)
I can now utilize the new found power not only because it's clutched correctly, but because i'm not scared to hit a corner at speed.
The secondary rollers probably took a hit with the violence of 6 broken belts.
The primary clutch was my fault for not using Blue Loctite on nuts.
Now i've put so much Blue Loctite on, it looks like Papa Smurf gang banged my engine compartment!

P.S1:
I would like to thank all involved for helping me get here.

Art/Beerman--sent me a new clutch for only $4500
Dalton--sent me a secondary because he felt sorry for me
SteveOOO/Clutchmaster--made me realize i'm not the only nut job here
Mike/Knapp--turns out the grumpy bastard has a sense of humor & actually likes corners & Emoji's
Rick/rnsr01--for flashing my sled like a Crack dealer then disappeared
Fleecer--i can't say his name because it's confidential, but Canucks are just CRAZY

Tom/MrSled--for allowing me to push the Literary Envelope without getting in trouble or getting a detention

P.S2: There are multiple references here that show "our" age
-Edith Bunker
-Viollette Beauregard
-Papa Smurf
-and one Bible reference

What does all this mean?
YOU BOYS are STUCK with ME for ONE MORE YEAR!!!!!!

We want you around for many more years!!

That will be up to Yamaha.
Something new or at least updated will need to be brought to the table.
I don't think i need a "new" chassis, but upgrade this one.
Make the motor fit better.
Clutch it correctly.
Oil tank & fix chain case issues and i'll stick around.

I'd like a QUIET clutch.

One would think yamaha can now learn from whats currently out there and do it their way. Yes they've never had a true rider forward jap built chassis but if they don't they may wind up packing it in.

And there it is, 10K miles from the OCD sled, I only have 6K more to catch ya! I love to see the OCD reports too by the way.

These things will fight a guy until all the "fixes" get done, but once they get done look out. Too bad it has to be such a love hate relationship type thing to get it there.

Now that i know what to look for & take care of, i might have a real good sled here.
I went through the same thing on my first Apex.

Keep the OCD reports coming . Very funny ,witty and informative! Guys like you,Knapp ,Rockerdan , Clutchmaster and a few others make this forum great and have helped us all improve our rides!

Until today I thought your abbreviation stood for the disorder Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and is how you described yourself....
lol

Well I’ve been waiting and waiting and waiting some more! As usual OCD has not disappointed viewers! Lots going on here, if your wanting your Winder to be reliable this is the place to ask questions. OCD has seen most everything with this sled so I’m sure he will be happy to answer questions :)
I’m wondering if he will be on Yamaha payroll soon?
Thanks for the report, another stellar thread on the part of OCD!
Ok I have to go look up Bible verses now!
Oh yea and order a bunch of sled parts tooo!
:drink:

“The end of a matter is better than its beginning, and patience is better than pride.” Is the Bible reference.

Steve I love your writing style but must admit I know the Bunkers and they’re meathead as well lol

Any issues with the drive shaft wear, or upper gear in chain case? Seems to be random. My buddy has 8k miles on his and no wear at driveshaft at all.
