2016 Viper L-TX LE
Can I get some post with positive feedback on their 16 turbos?? I've got 300 miles on my MPI Turbo ed LTX LE and I love it. It pulls like a raped ape and handles like a dream. Coming off an Apex, I approach a rough section and I tense all up waiting for the beating. This thing just hammers through it. I Love it! I'm just tired of all the negativity on this site about the new motor. Everything I read in this forum gets stuck in my head and I end up waiting for the Rods to come through the case. How many people out there are having good luck like me???

I have almost 1600 miles (2000K) on mine. I love it and am not worried about it blowing up. I can not believe that ALL the rods have issues. Are there some, likely but as of yet mine is holding great. I have gauges on mine and see AFR's as low as 10 and never over 13. I have seen up to 5 on the boost gauge momentarily but that was only when it was -30C and I hit 170K with more to go except for the little guy on my shoulder kept saying: "So how broken up will you be when this goes sideways". Although bad decisions make great stories, I would rather read about others bad choices. :)

My suspension is very much the way I like it and even the Tuner 3's on hard pack work well. I just got some curves with leading edge and 6" carbides to try out as the tuners are too narrow off trail. I would absolutely buy it all over again and have no second thoughts at all.

My buddy has the 2016 with Turbo, we have done about 400 km this year. All is good and no issues. I have 2014 with turbo and we are dead even until the top end where he starts to pull away. These sleds are great don't worry just drive it. Yamaha will stand behind it!

i spoke to yamaha friday, they said there is no rod issue, only have had failures from the wrong boost controler and another turbo manufacture, nothing to worrie about-thats right from a guy named reme from yamaha canada

You say your buddy is running wide open with only 400km on the motor, there's an issue.
Tick, tock, tick tock. Yamaha won't stand behind that one if see blows. Improper break in.

That's all great news. I do have a gauge and am running about 5lbs boost max. I did have the bad boost controller but discovered it when setting the clutching up on a dyno. Hopefully the two runs on the dyno at 9lbs did not shorten the engines life. We just saw 9lbs for a second. Also saw over 200HP and got very excited. We got the new boost controller the next day and all was good.

1600 miles on 2016 LTX LE new build. Absolutely zero issues.
Pulls nice. Handles good. Flawless.

However.
My buddy with 16 feb build ltx LE 1000 miles just blew some sort of gasket on his motor. Oil all over right side motor and dripping out bottom.
There is no reason to worry. Unless you had bad controller period.

Have him check for double gasket on oil filter.....very common on first oil change

Thats good to hear guys. Was hoping it was just a bad batch of rods. Looking more and more like thats the case. Also looks like Yamaha is covering any that go with factory approved system. Cant really ask for anything more than that other than 100% inspection of rods at factory so it doesnt happen again.

I dont think its a bad batch. The yxz 1000r are having the same issue ( same rods/engine ) With the higher rpm 11000 over the 9000 in viper ( because no clutch handles more rpm ) MPI is only offering 155hp kit in the yxz. 180hp in viper. The limit is wery close at 180/190hp. Mcxpress stress tested the 190kit in dyno and it did not pass his test. The 270kit blows the rod in 1 second. Mcx is working on a lower boost kit 170ish, but he still dont like the safe margin, so probably newer going to happen.

Its nothing wrong with this engine, but its not made for boost anymore thats for sure.

Are the European sleds different spec than USA and Canada? If so then it is very possible the European sleds were built in a different run. Sorry but you guys are having a much higher failure rate than here. Is one reason I suspect a bad batch.

I am thinking you might be on to something. I did a google search on yxz Engine failure and all I could get was a bunch of results on clutching issues. I did the same for SRViper and found a bunch of references that all seem to tie back to the threads here.

There was no turbokit redy for the yxz when it came out. Thats means alot of testing and dyno work. The issue with the rods was detected and thasf why MPI only offer 155hp on stock rods. They offer a bigger kit also but then you have to change rods. They even sell a rod change kit. Why 155hp in the yxz version is probably the higher rpm range in this engine with more stress. With the lower rpm on the Viper engine 180hp may work.

Why so many broken sleds up here? They where all blowing up before the info about the new internal parts was known. The old engine would take 270hp and the new engine last like 2 second before blowing up. The 190hp kit have been stresstested in dyno a few times but the rods where failing. I assume they where testing with maby 210 ish hp to have some margin. But failed. Riding at 180/190hp is the absolute limit of the engine. Some bad gas or other fail creating detonation will kill the rod for shure. With a safe margin say like 220hp. Mabye with a detonation the rod would have survived. This is why they dont recommend riding the 190kit up here ( mcx )

I wouldn't trust much that guys says. He told me he has never heard of a chaincase bearing going bad on these sleds. Just look it up on here tons of cases. I wouldn't trust #*$&@ when it comes to warranty with these people. My chaincase on a one year old sled needs 2100 to repair and my extended warranty doesn't cover
Be very carefull because Yamaha treats Americans better than Canadians when it comes to warranty as I am finding out the hard way.
