Hey guys I need some serious help here. I was riding near seney in the u.p Saturday all day long sled ran like a champ, she's got just under 1400 miles on her. Rode the ditch along 28 from seney to shingleton, nice and easy just working our way along not over working the machines. Sled was doing great then started to miss on one cylinder so I thought that was weird maybe I had some water in the fuel. Went another mile or so and hit 8 south in shingleton and the cylinder dropped out. Tried to limp it to the road and cylinder would pop back in once in a while then there was a squeel, a grindish sound and a complete stop. All electronics come on but starter just clicks. This all happened in about 1.5 miles total. Towed the sled the rest of the way out so it wasn't in the chaincase. The primary will roll over but she's tight, no oil leaking from machine. I have an icebox cold air intake, a super q silencer, a clutch kit, and a pcv with a proven map by fellow ty folks. WTH happened?!? Please tell me your thoughts

I would hope not it has a frog skin on it I can check for holes

Found the culprit, looks like a rod blew through the bottom of the engine on the center piston. 1400 miles on the engine any thoughts as to why? Also where do I go from here

Later model 16 and up have the updated but weaker rods made of butter, Yamaha pushed the mpi turbo ads for 16 but then renigged and said not compatible with 2016 and up but replaced them under warranty if you put money down on the turbo at the time of sled purchase, I think the were only a couple case's that non turbo sleds dropped a rod but them were modded like yours.

Very rare for NA 1049 to break a rod. The change in 2016 seems to have resulted though in rods that are JUST able to hold together. Obviously out of warranty so I'd look for a used complete engine at this point. 2014 and up.

That's to bad. After the Japan weather disaster, Yamaha had to outsource some parts, rods being one of them which weren't up to snuff.
Even some 16 Apex got some it seems also.

Yea kind of stinks, bought yammie for the reliability and took the motor out with 1400 miles. Not under warranty either, not sure I'll buy another.

If you have a friendly dealer or a proper one submit a claim. You never know. They were covering these in past.

Yea I can try, I bought the sled as is with no warranty from a dealer in Wisconsin and I'm in Michigan but I can try. How do you think they would feel about the mods?

It should not matter. They said in writing the new 16 motor was as strong as the old motor. They were wrong. It’s worth a try. I would

Ask them to replace the motor. I had one fold up and they said it was because I had a turbo. I did, the MPI turbo they basically paid me to install as part of my pre order, but also had the updated mandated rods installed at the dealer. They said it was an oil issue. Long story short, you can see and touch the piston and the wrist pin is smooth as silk and you can spin the bearing cap on the crank the same way. At the end of the day, they replaced it on their dime. I paid the dealer a bit for all their work as they would have gotten screwed over in the deal.

I called my local dealer and they said there is no chance of yamaha replacing that engine for me. They claim it's not even worth calling being that it was a 16 bought in 19 so it looks like I'm s.o.l unless someone on here has a good contact with yamaha.
