2003 yamaha rx-1 wont start please help...

So new fuel and plugs and still no go it seemed like it was ready to fire up but nothing I have spark but I guess that dont mean anything so I guess now is to test stator? or pick up wire. Do you know what the reading should be?

Thanks Shawn.

I do not have the reading on the stator...but if you become a VIP I could get you the link to download the manual. Before you test the stator. Take the air box lid of and the foam so you can see the inlet cones on the carbs... open the throttle and put some fuel in a water bottle mister and spray some fuel in and then crank it... see if the engine pulse firing will get the new fuel to flow ....full choke when you do this.

I have the reading s from a friend, And I will try the fuel thing and again keep you posted lol.

Thanks.

Well charged up battery to be sure its good choke open and sprayed fuel into the carbs and still nothing. :(

No fire at all? With fuel, new plugs and spark and you get nothing... then maybe you need to do a leak-down to see if it has compression??

Im going to double check today to see if there is continuous spark i would find it funny that the compression would be weak as it ran awesome as it always has and just go out next morning and nothing but it did fire that time with quick start. Who knows I will be bringing it in to my yamaha dealer Tomorrow morning to see, I am wasting to much snowmobiling time trying to find the problem and with any luck its gonna be the simplest thing I hope lol. I will you posted as to what happens.

Thanks again.

I really think its probably the throttle position switch located on the end of the carb rack. I recommend that you remove the 2 screws that fasten the plastic housing to the end carb and spray tuner cleaner or even brake kleen around the shaft of the switch. Rotate the switch several times until it feels smooth. Reinstall it and use the marks left by the screws to get it back into the right position. I could not believe how much this switch affected starting and low speed running since this is a carbed machine. PM me if you want to hear more.

Sounds like tors switch also unplug the two wires on the wnd of the carb rack and plug them into one another this will by pass tors also might wanna think about sea foaming the cylinders rx1 had a habbit of getting nasty carbon build up on thw rings and valves low compression from carbon will cause a no run issue

Thanks guys, So I did loop the tors switch awhile ago as it was acting up. As for sea foaming the cylinders do you just poor some into them? I do know of putting it into the gas and even the oil on cars and truck.

I never thought of looking at the TPS would this cause it to not fire and just turn over with the odd backfire? I am lost at this point the only thing not looked at yet was Stator I also have a new battery coming as might think that could have been the issue even though that battery was new but didnt turn over fast the last few times.

Probly gonna catch hell for saying this butt i dumped half a bottle right in the cylinders let it sit for a day put the rest in the tank sled was down to 185 -190 went back 208 -210 i places some rags on thw top of the motor ans turnes it over with no plugs in it to blow the left over out and it was nasty looking what came out now i sea foam every 4 tanksr this ethonal fuel is down right garbage i sea foam my bike and boat also

The TPS switch will cause no starting, backfiring, running on 3,2 or 1 cylinder. I went through hell with my sled last year trying to keep it running on 4 cylinders. I had hard starting and kept a car battery in my truck to boost it to get it going on cold mornings. I had to head back home on 2 occasions when it just wouldn't go. I cleaned my carbs 5 or 6 times. I was using about 1/4 of a can of Sea Foam per tank of fuel trying to further clean the carbs and get rid of carbon. I bypassed the TORS. I replaced the battery and the fuel pumps. All this had no effect really but I was hopeful every ride that I had solved the problem. This year on the first ride I barely got it started. It was hard to restart all day. It ran on 2 or 3 cylinders until it got a couple of miles down the trail. I was ready to just give up sledding. I left it on the trailer overnight and when I went to put it in the garage the next day, the check engine icon and blinking orange light came on. This was the first time that this happened. The code was for a TPS problem. I opened the switch and found the mechanism full of crap. I cleaned and lubricated the switch and put it back together. It made a day and night difference. Sled fires right up and idles so smooth that the primary rattle is all but gone. It restarts without giving a little bit of throttle. It never did that even when new. Give it a try. You will probably need small vise grips to break the Phillips screws loose. I'm going to replace with allen bolts like I did with the float bowls and will give the switch a spray a couple of times a season.

Awesome info!!! Thanks for sharing this.

You may have water in the fuel. Put a can of dry gas in a NEW tank of gas.

Well guys you all have put alittle bit of hope back in me in getting this sled going :) I almost considered getting rid of it and looking for something else I have always owned Yamaha nd I always had faith in them as they NEVER gave me as much grief as this one just did my other rx1 other then a change of oil and plugs it would always start right up on the very cold days and would never let me down I will be looking at it this weekend and will forsure keep all you guys posted.

Thanks again for all the help :)
