Anybody heard anything substantial yet? I've been getting hints lately that it's going to be a nice winter (for snowmobilers).

1. Great apple harvest this year. Don't ask me why, but the apple farmers around here swear that awesome harvests are typically followed by brutal winters.

2. Hot, dry summer. Trends indicate that hot, dry summers bring cold, snowy winters. The last hot, dry summer we had was 2002 with several days in the 90s. The winter that followed was incredible, with 200 inches of snow locally and consistent cold. Long season of my riding career (started 12/2, ended 3/15...I keep track of this stuff in my spare time ;)! )

3. Lake Ontario is still warm. Even though November is just a few days away, Lake Ontario is still 55 degrees. That is quite warm for so late in the season. The warmer the water, the more efficient the lake effect is. The warm lake just a few hundred feet from me has kept the lakeshore from having a frost yet. Everyone south of the lake has already had a killing frost.

The local news a few weeks ago said it will be warmer than normal for the midwest and the west and normal for the east. However, they cant get TOMORROW'S weather forecast right, so how do they know whats gonna happen 3 months from now???
Ive also heard from another source that it will be cold 'n snowy this winter, so who knows.
It will be what it will be. Its not like Im going to give up on sleds just because we have one poor winter.

You guys in the midwest haven't had a good snow season in awhile, have you? I can't believe how many Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota sleds I have seen riding the Hill the last couple of years. You know you're always welcome in NY if the snow isn't good west of the Ohio valley...

i saw squerills with big bushie tails playing with there nuts in my back yard yesterdat  does that mean anything?

I live in southern Wisconsin, a little south of Madison, and we had 2 snowstorms that dropped 9" each time. Thats really good for this part of the state.
I ride in northern Wisconsin (Minocqua) and we had a great winter there too. I managed to log 1300+ miles, and I could have rode a lot more (some days it was waaay too cold, other days it was 45 degrees, other days we had mechanical issues that limited riding).
We had a great winter.
Minnesota had a poor winter though...

Hey Captain...it most snow and then stay for awhile, right? Not here. Lake effect doesn't have much "body" to it so it tends to pack down and then break down because it doesn't stay compacted well. Terrible for snowballs too! That's why we need 200 inches each winter...it constantly needs to be refreshed.

True, we get a lot of lake effect in Minocqua where I ride and its usually powder.
Thats why you need the 12"+ of heavy wet snow around Dec 10th to give you a good, solid base.

Sorry folks, but I don't get excited about the weather anymore. This way, I won't be let down. Seeing is believing.

I see that John Dee has his seasonal outlook up already.
He's call for a "normal" winter.
I guess we'll just have to see what happens.
If we get enough snow that I can ride over 1,000 miles, Im a happy camper.
