I purchased a used Apex with 6000km on it over the summer. I’ve started it every 3-4 weeks and have always started and seem to run very well.

Today, I went to start to and when it started it seemed to idle very low. It normally would idle at about 2500rpm when first started but today is was much lower.

I let it idle until the temperature light went off. Then went to give it a big of gas and it would stall. It did this a few times and restarted. Then it stalled out again, and will not restart at all. It turns over, but does not fire.

Where should I start my troubleshooting? We have a trip planned over the Christmas holidays and as Murphy’s law has it, my new sled will all of a sudden not start.

Any idea’s would be appreciated. The low idle on the start up was definitely noticeable. Also, I did put another 20 lites of gas in it about a month ago to bring the tank up to 3/4’s so I don’t think bad gas would be an issue.

Thanks

I would start with new plugs.

Possibly fouled plugs. I had that happen to me on my 14 and it was plugs.

Thanks. I will go buy plugs tomorrow and give that a try and report back the results.

And from now on, DO NOT start your sled every 3-4 weeks during any extended shut down. Once it's parked for the off season, leave it that way.
The first gen Apex's run extremely rich on initial cold start up. Your just asking for trouble with fouled plugs.

Exactly, the most important thing is that it is stored in a proper dry environment.
I change my oil at the end of the season, put it in my enclosed trailer, back it up in my old bank barn.
Get it out in fall, never fails to start instantly. Did this will all my four stroke sleds since 2007.

Thanks Everyone. I put in 4 new plugs and it fired up and run's great again. I always assumed starting them up on occasion would keep the critters away and run some fuel through the lines. I always did that religiously with my 99 SRX but sounds like it may not be a good idea with 4-strokes. When you guys store at the end of the season, do you fill the tank or try to leave it as empty as possible. I've heard different theories on which is better. Thanks again for your help. I love this forum.

I'd only be worried about that if the sled is stored for two years or more. I usually park my sled with whatever is left after the last ride, which is most of the time well under half. I don't suck the fuel out before I put it away for spring/summer/fall.
I like it at a lower level, because then I can top it up with fresh premium before I ride again.
Some people suck most of it out when they bring it out of storage, and that is Ok also.

I leave as little as fuel as possible, have even siphoned it down and add Stabil. Even with a fuel stabilizer, no matter who makes it is just ok, nothing beats a fresh tank of fuel in the fall. I am sure you are aware to never shut the sled off until the warm up light has turned off, that will foul a set of plugs every time! And after just doing them you have to agree not the most pleasant job, especially below zero while your buddies are wanting to go!

run mine up to full temp every month. did foul a set of plugs on my 05 rx but once i started letting them run until all the heat exchangers where hot to the touch, i have had no issues. replaced the plugs on the 2011 around the 20000 km mark and they where still good but for me it was time to do them. got 27000 km on it and still going.

X2 on the low fuel level and stabilizer. That's what I do. Then run it for 5-10 minutes to make sure the stabilizer gets into the rest of the fuel system.
