Over the weekend I trailered for 5 hours and sled would not start. Fuel pump was not priming so i switched the relay. -28 when I was trying to start it. I got it going and fuel was working fine. After all the turning over I think the starter quit. I tried shorting the starter relay that is less than 1 year old and nothing. It was drawing a lot of power. I have removed the starter (THANK YOU) to this thread for giving me the tips to do it. With the starter out it turns but is difficult to turn and grinds. I assume it should turn smoothly and easily but I have never had one out before.
Could someone confirm that it should be smooth and easy to turn before i buy a new starter.
Thanks

Remove the two end bolts and pull the starter apart. You'll more than likely find loose magnets in there.

I took it apart and the magnets are not spaced evenly but the starter will hardly turn by hand. I will be putting a new starter in.Remove the two end bolts and pull the starter apart. You'll more than likely find loose magnets in there.

Yes they should turn smoothly but with a magnet to magnet feel. Grinding or rough is bad. Open it up and you will see issues if you feel them.

So I finally got a chance to get back at this repair. The instructions on here on how to remove the starter worked great. The only thing I did differently was to put the front end on jack stands then use a floor jack with a block of wood so i could control the lift easily. Starts right up...... Ready for snow!!!

Good idea and safer I suspect. I would have used them if I had stands too.So I finally got a chance to get back at this repair. The instructions on here on how to remove the starter worked great.
