2008 Phazer RTX ... possible extension options

I am new to the forum and was looking for advice. I bought my son a 2008 Phazer RTX with a 1" lug ... he wants to play in deeper powder and follow me (2008 Nytro 153" MTX). I have a few ideas floating around in my head as to what conversion to go with. I don't want him to loose a lot of power in the bottom end. I am concerned that the 500cc can't handle much of a change but please prove me wrong!

Idea 1 ... track change only to 1 1.5" lug

Idea 2 ... rail extension and track change to 128" with 1.5" lug. The only track available is 13.5 inches wide. Or I cut down a 15" to the phazer 14" wide. I like this option

Idea 3 ... prefered BUT lots of concern. I would go to a 1.5" lug and do a simple rail extension to 136". What do I need for a tunnel extension? do I have to change the secondary clutch and weights? should I look at changing the gear ratio? Does it have the power to turn the track in 2-4' of snow that we get in central Canada?

We do some trail riding here but mostly we like to get out and carve in powder, climb some hills and explore.

Any and all advice is appreciated.

Lots of happy 136 1.5" riders out there. I would extend the tunnel as well.

Thats the way I am leaning. I have read that a few have changed their top gear to either an 18t or a 19t. Will probably do that as well as I will have it apart anyway. I was looking at some of the tunnel extensions that guys have made and MTX bumper adjustments. Thanks for your input.

I can tell you that the 121" x 1.5" won't help much. In fact, my son buried the Phazer today with that track. Just went off the trail a bit to get into a drift and she just cut through that powder like a hot chainsaw through butter. She just doesn't float.

I'm looking at extending it too to 136". If I'm lucky, maybe I can find a nice 136" x 15" track and cut it to 14".

Mooseman, I found a huge difference with going just to the 1.5" 121. What does that phazer have up front for skis?before I put on slydogs and float plate the front end would hit the snow and just tank.

We still have the stock skinny skis so that is part of the problem so that's also in the plans. Not sure if we'll go with Slydogs though because my son calls them "ugly elf shoes" and they're bad for darting on trails. May go with tuner skis as they are supposedly wider than stock and good on trails.

Funny enough, last night, the front end was on top of the snow, just the track was buried. He surprisingly is able to handle it pretty good in the deep stuff, getting it stuck only a couple of times.

Here are the CHEAP to spendy options.
1# move the skid back 3.5" and find an agressive 128x13.5 take off cat track
2# 121x14x1.5 freeride, probibly the same amount of traction as a 128x13.5
3# extentions and a 136" freeride, awesome track, you CAN fit it without tunnel/bumper extentions if you modify the snow flap mount.
The Phazer engine has plenty of torque to spin the 136" freeride and you should see 40-45mph track speed out of it in the DEEP stuff.
#4 find a set of MTX rails and go a full 144"

I was running 1 .75 track (on stock 121 skid) with a simple driver swap to 8 tooth extroverts.
Im now running a 144 take-off with the same 8 tooth with no issues. Both will get you through powder much better then the stock track.

I am super happy with 144" tipped rail extensions and my 13.5 x 1.25 x 144" Firecat track. Using a Phazer Mountain rear bumper and buying a flat piece of aluminum, it was a easy to do the stretch. G.B.

Thanks for the input. I did look at going to a 128" extension with the 13.5" firecat track but the more I read on here and the input from others I believe I will stretch it to a 136" x1.5. Was reading on another thread that guys were getting 85+mph out of the phazer ... I got his sled to 70 but I was in a field so on Sunday I took it on some hard pack and hit 82.5mph and it was still climbing. That is what made the decision that the sled had enough power to go to a 136"

X2 on the 121 x 1.5"

I think I would drop the 128 x 13.5" option. That seems like a waste of money, but then again, I have not heard of many doing this option, so it is only based on the size of the footprint.

The 1.5" paddle made such a difference, after that it was just learning how to ride in deep snow, now that I had the paddle to do it. The 136" x 1.5 sounds ideal if you can find the track. Otherwise, don't even hesitate on the 121x 1.5". I run head to head with my buddies stock 07 FX and I can mow through deep weeds and snow where he will get buried. We swap sleds and experience the same results with same stock skis. Mtn skis would be a good option too.

Good luck and keep us updated.

OK a couple more questions regarding going to a 136x1.5"

1 - Did anyone do a gear change of any sort.

2 - any clutch work needed

3 - did anyone go to extrovert drivers?
