To prove a true Criminal Code Careless driving charge compared to a provincial statute charge of careless driving is apples and oranges as Shadow was explaining. Under Alberta's traffic safety act (Off Highway Vehicle), if you are found operating any type of motor vehicle 50km plus over the speed limit you are subpoena'd to court automatically to explain to a Justice of the Peace to plead your case as to why you were going that fast or (No I was not going that fast). First you halfto plead not not guilty to the offence though. As to them impounding your sled, well there are so many different reasons police can impound your sled from not registered, no insurance, unsafe equipment, intoxication ETC... Just be (Yes sir no sir and you will leave with a lecture unless you have a traffic natzi on your hands.
95% of the time there are lazer traps on the trails because some local fellow sledders have voiced their concerns to the local authorities of the select few that drive like A#@-HO#@& having no regard for other possible sledders on the trail and voila!
Some people ruin it for others driving like an idiot when there are multiple sleds on the trail not making it safe for anybody forcing the authorities to step in.MTC

There isn't a careless charge under the criminal code. Careless is provincial. I think you might be thinking of Dangerous Operative of MV. (Sec 249).
