A friend of mine is rebuilding a 2009 Phazer that had a reduction gear (the one on the end of the crankshaft) fail. All of the teeth were shredded off the gear. He found a used gear to replace the shredded one but it will not fully slide on to the shaft. Does this gear have a shrink fit onto the crankshaft? He said that it is 0.001" smaller than the crankshaft. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

sounds like you need to heat up the gear. i usually do it at work with an old french fryer filled with gear lube or motor oil. with the dimension you posted, it sounds like an interferance fit.

Maim, tell me you don't work at McDonalds.

lol nope. i work at a heavy truck shop and some times the bearings need to be boiled in oil to go onto the pinion gear or carrier.

Mmmmmmmmm deep fried gears. If you don't have this then torch away your problems. Just remember it's hot hahahaha.

changing both gears I assume? With a 50/35 ratio they could develop a specific wear pattern that needs to be matched.

I was just looking to find out if somebody definitively knew if this was an interference fit or not.

After looking in my 2007 manual, it basically just says to install the gear on the shaft, there is no mention of any interference fit, having to press it on, etc. I know some of the parts on the balance shaft were changed after 2007 though, so it's possible there could be other changes to the fit of the gear. Anyone have a newer manual?

One I have here is just held on with left hand threaded bolt. Splined. Actually a loose fit. Put bolt in and use a puller. Has someone been in there before? There is one spline in gear bigger than others and one groove in crank smaller. If gear was forced on it would be a issue. Gear is clocked to crank in this way.

Here's a little snip from the 2008 supplement to the service manual, it shows that there is one spline tooth that is shorter than the others on the inside of the gear. Maybe it's not aligned with the correct location on the crankshaft?

When I rebuilt my motor it was tight coming off and back on. Gear puller off and oem bolt to install.
