2011 APEX-SE---STUD LENGTH AND NUMBER???

The track is fairly tight. I think what is happening is the protectors flex and move in, I can easily move them a 1/4" on the crappy little brackets... they should be channel shaped no C shaped.

Tom, I think you got it. I just put a bar across both protectors and used a pry bar to press up and they flex up at least a quarter inch. If the track hits hard enough I could see the studs hitting. For the guys that added spacers to the bottom this may bend the protector mount up. It needs a block between the tunnel and protector to keep it solid. Maybe a bolt through the tunnel into the block to keep the block in place. Four would do the trick. I'm sure Yamaha will have a fix next year. Ulmer could build them. Send me a set to test.

Can You put some shims between the braket and the protector to keep it from flexing? Maybe bend the bracket down a little first for even more clearance. If you add to the bottom and it hits hard it can still flex quite a ways up.

Thats my thoughts exactly.

clearance

i checked my "se" on the weekend and i,ve got about 1/8 to 3/16 clearance from the top of the lug to the protectors. allen ulmer reported some of the tracks were already slightly rubbing on the protecters so it sounds like the protecters are all a little bit different because of the brackets. i took the seat off to see about shimming down the brackets but i really like the idea of putting spacers between the bracket and the tunnel. a lot stronger and will take the flex out of the brackets. on a side note taking off the seat and all the plastic is a lot easier than before.

Has this been determined if it is a SE only issue or if this is also an issue with the XTX?

I don't care if Yamaha warrants studs or not. If you can't put 1.325" studs on a track without hitting your muffler system then the Engineer who built it should have some common sense beaten into him/her.

I didn't spend all that money on a new sled to not be safe on the icey trails and lakes of WI. If Chris Reid is doing a survey and they know studs are going to be an issue then they should speak up and tell the owners and dealers so that people don't stud them or find a fix for it.

I didn't think I would ever say this but maybe it is time for ski doo. :o|

Chris pretty much spoke up with this on his blog and he posted here in this thread on December 2.

Not exactly sure what he wants us to accomplish by taking off the seat.

Perhaps he will expand on that post.

Quote from Chris Reid on his blog.

"I also figure that a good tuner, upon reflection will pull off the seat (which by the way is far easier on the 2011 Apex than previous models) and give some thought to maximizing the clearances and effectiveness of the tunnel protectors etc. The adage of an ounce of prevention being worth a pound of cure applies."

I am guessing that this is what you are working on Tom.

Maybe you could have a BEHIND THE BARN, unofficial, off the record chat with Chris to see what he was implying here. Looks like someone there has some thoughts but is not allowed to officially express them and pulling off the seat is perhaps the first step.

The only thing gained by pulling the seat would be to shim the exhaust up... and that did cross my mind.

This is exactly my point, if Yamaha knows there is an issue or problem then they should fix it themselves on a $14K sled. :o| :o| :o|

When you buy a BMW you don't have to fix stuff on it. This isn't a KIA or Camry, Saturn, or some other commodity sled. This was a Game Changer.

I'm not so sure you could do that. I'm just thinking if you adjusted it anyway, it could cause cracking down the road?

Lots of views with no comments.

Has anyone ran the 2011 XTX with studs and have the studs touched the muffler system?

I would rather have it fixed before the expensive replacement of the muffler system.

Reading CR's blog with replies you can clearly see there is an issue but is it the 128" SE or all of them.

From what I have been told, it's more the 128". The XTX seems to have enough clearance for the EXUP, but you will need to modify the end piece for the rear exchanger. I think you need to give some time for the smart guys on these forms to find a fix. I don't believe this to be a major issue, but one that will ultimately need to be addressed. What size stud, do you want to run? You have the XTX, correct?

Yes, I have the XTX and I have 171-1.325" woody's installed with the hyfax added to the back protection to prevent the rear exchanger damage. I just don't want to mess with the EXUP system getting damaged.

How thick of protection? And how did you secure it?

Just took the hyfax and drilled some holes and put some screws in it. It screws into the protection that is already there.

Any new revelations on what CR was alluding to by saying to remove the seat? he seems to be implying to raise the exhaust up a tad, as Mr. Sled surmised.....
