I have crazy primary rattle. I looked up lots of pictures of stu. Shafts but I do t see any 2011 apex pictures. My engine case behind the primary doesn’t have a small bearing retainer ring like others. Looks like I have to take the whole engine side cover off? Any help??

To remove the PTO shaft on an Apex, you must remove the side cover, there is also a chain from the PTO shaft going down that drives the oil pump & water pump, the PTO shaft on an Apex can not be easily removed.

The stub shaft is only on 3 cylinder models (RS Vector/FX Nytro/SR Viper/Sidewinder), where you can remove 4 bolts and pull the stubshaft out.

As Srxspec said. The stub shaft or gear reduction unit is not a simple unbolt. I had to remove my engine to replace a blown out gear reduction unit. Took a long day and was back together. You need to get a new pan gasket and gear reduction cover. Careful with the chain in there. Its a bit of a pita to get on.
See post 82. Video of the loose gear reduction.

Are you sure it is in the gear reduction? If no play in bearing/shaft maybe just the primary clutch itself? Need a rebuild?
Picked up a rattle in my primary last week on my 11, only there at idle and no play in gear reduction shaft.

You might get the pto off the small gear for water pump /oil pump chain but no way to get back on without pulling engine. Basically you have to tip engine upside down with oil pan off. Lower, lower gear into housing with chain on it. then install pto on chain. Then lift chain and lower gear in position then slide pin through gear. re install water pump and oil pan.
just replaced oil pump chain on my 30,000km apex last year, chain broke after rolling on sled its side. Chain was stretched so much came off gear. There is no tensioner.
