2016 vipers and up cannot be turboed due to weak connecting rods, correct? Only 2014s and 15s are safe to turbo with stock connecting rods? Just curious.

There was a bad batch of rods that were not properly heat treated so SOME 2016 engines had bad rods, but Yamaha doesn't know exactly which ones. Early 16' still had "old stock" engines which still have rubber 1/2 circles between the valve cover and head which can be seen with a flashlight by removing the clutch side panel, those are good. I would think Yamaha made sure that any of the questionable engines didn't make it 17' production sleds but you never know. With the Sidewinder coming out in 17' I'm sure the 17' and 18' are off the approved list since there is a factory turbo option. I played it safe and bought a holdover 14' for a smoking good deal.

Thanks for the reply. I take it you have a turbo on your 14?

Yes I thought for sure we would have seen even NA late 2016's rods fail by now but not so. It must have been a very small number of bad rods since many of the 400 factory Turbo 16 guys getting rod replacement are finding their rods were good even. My take. There is no warranty with a Turbo on a Viper going forward. Never was before on Nytros or Vipers before Yamaha offered it. Yet still many did it just like other mods. 16.5 + I would check the rods with a file. Later go for it but risk is totally on your hands. Keep in mind the Sidewinder though. Sure makes sense unless you want a sleeper! Is a few crashed Winders out there now. Will be more. Could probably buy entire sled for under $5000 and put it in a Viper. Hmmm!

Thanks Cannondale. Not in the market, but was just scratching my head last night wondering while watching the Badgers lose! I do like the idea of a sleeper though!! Exactly my train of thought!

Yea that was a bummer! I have had my eye out on them. So far $5000 buyback is best I have seen for a totaled Winder. Still too much. Thanks Cannondale. I bet Cannondale27 and Grizz could team up to do the Viper/Winder swap!!

Would be easy. Use a EVO skid Intercooler, keep Viper Radiator and swap in winder motor and electrics. No one would ever know.I bet Cannondale27 and Grizz could team up to do the Viper/Winder swap!!

or maybe project SideViper

Speaking from experience the swap from 1 model to another is not a piece of cake. I out an apex motor in an rx-1 chassis back in 06 what a mess that was!!!
