I just picked up a used Attak. Previous owner dropped from a 23 tooth to 22 tooth up top and also installed the 68 link chain. Has anybody else done this? What can I expect? Any clutching changes needed? Any negatives like worse gas milage and much loss of any top end? The owner said he did at one point see 115 on the dream "O" meter with plenty left before he backed off. He did give me the stock gear and chain if I wanted to swap it back.

Test it out and swap over to 23 and let us know...I am going to do alot of gear testing this winter...IF we ever get ice!....
I got a 23 ready to play with, and my 24...now I still think for radaring the stock 24 is best on the rtxs....however I want to try a true test on same day same track same sled to see if i can pull same top end with a 23...Im sure i will see more track spin on the shorty on bottom though.
theoretical on 24/38 is approx 134mph....while thoeretical on 23/38 is about 128mph.
we will see...test on!

I put a 22 0n my last year rtx gave excellent bottom end , good for jumps ,did not slow it down by alot.
I have an 06 attak with stock clutching and 220 picks in my track, on hard hard pack I can see 119-120, before I put picks I would see 128-129 on the speedo, now I put the 22 tooth gear on and I see 120-121 on the speedo and same hard pack, and I still can't get full shift out, about 1/4" on the primary sheave.

Dan I would put the stock gearing back in it. I don't believe it will work as good without the 23 in it. You won't pull the top end.

If you're not worried about top end over 100-105 mph just leave it in. It will be quicker through the corners with the 22, but will be 3-4 mph slower on a all out top end run.
Do you really plan on keeping this sled???

I think a sled that gets to a honest 100 mph, is more fun on the trails than a sled that takes longer to get to 120.

Hey guys....
I like the gearing/top speed threads...Does anyone think a 23 top gear will yield HIGHER top speeds on radar gun?...
I got a 23 gear that i really want to test....with real world same day testing.....So many guys talk about the 23 being faster....but time and time again the guys i see running higher MPH on the gun are running stock gearing....
anyone else?..chime and and give your results...I surely will post as much info as i can IF and WHEN we get ice or snow this season....man it better start getting cold or we will all be trailering north many hours!....still green!!!!!!!!!
BTW im keeping the 23 gear in the toolbox for now....

When I dropped a tooth on my 05 Rx1 (24 TO 23) or 02 SRX (23 TO 22 If I remember correctly), the sleds would gain about 2 sledlengths in the midrange till about 100mph or so then the stock geared sleds would go walking by at a slow pace of maybe 2 or 3 mph. I have seen this many times. I never did get a chance to radar them though. This was on the lake in hardpack. An Apex may be a different animal but I would bet the sled will be slower with the 23 top gear on any run over 1/3 of a mile. I guess it is all what you are looking for. With a 30 mile lake at my backdoor I am always looking for topend on those multimile wot lake runs.

The important thing to consider is that changing gears ALONE is a bad thing. You need to make other changes in order for everything to work right together. In particular, clutching MUST be changed - add weight to the primary or find some other means of forcing it to shift harder/faster and depending on how far it is geared down, OVERDRIVE may be required in order to maintain top end. Just gearing down WILL yield increased fuel consumption and lower top speed. Give it the whole works and fuel consumption and top end should be VERY close.

I am in same boat as you...lakes are name of game here..and radaring is alot of what we do on weekends....never was much of a drag racer, really doesnt interest me much....
I am running proline clutching, and had read alot about the 23 gear with this clutch kit...so i was thinking about it.
I guess from the feeback,it does sound like the stock gears for top end will yield more mph on long hauls.
Ok,since we are talking about it....has anyone gone the other way with this theory?....25 top tooth???..would it fit with the 70 link chain?...any thoughts?
Or would you simply go 37 on bottom gear??
