has anyone else had a problem with their RS motor fouling plugs? i have no idea what is causing this, and nor does the dealer. only does it on cold startup after it has been sitting for over 2 weeks. in 5700 miles, my viper has never fouled a plug, and this thing only has 490 on it! WTF! any sugestions on this one??? kind of anoying when the dealer charges almost 5 bucks a plug!

check the gaps. u might have some type of an electrical problem. also how cold is it when u start it? only fouled one plug in 2834mi-that was after trailering 300mi and tryin to start it up to put it into the garage.

I agree, check the gap. Check out a tool that I offer to do this accurately: www.gappertools.com
Having said that, you need to check a few other things as well.
Are the plugs wet? If so, you might have an ignition system problem.
Are the plugs black? If so, you probably have a fuel-to-air ratio problem which calls for a jet change.
My guess is that you have an ignition system problem... Have the dealer check the coils, cdi, etc.

Fouled plugs

The first time I had my rage out for a three day trip I had problems with the tors system.My dealer said Ihad a fouled plud which could possibly cause this problem. Changed plug no problem since.
The gist of the story is that when I went to pick up my sled he asked me how i started in cold weather. My answer was to apply full choke ,turn ignition and crank till it started and then slowly back off on the choke till it would idle.
Dealers answer was this was totally wrong! He said to turn engine over and slowly advance the choke till it started then back off on the choke to the point where it idled rough.He said i could assist with the throtle until it would idle rough. At that point let it warm up and it would smooth out as it came up to temp.
I wondered about this philosophy ,however I've done this procedeure ever since and guess what, no plug problem, no tors problem, and all is well at 900miles.
Try it out and see what happens ! Nothing ventured,nothing gained.

Have you been trailering with a full tank? I've heard of problems doing that.

Pull the choke off within 3 seconds to half way then for about 10 seconds then off it will run a bit rough but you will stop fouling if this is the real cause in the first place. Use the choke very sparingly.

I pull the choke down soon. I've seen some who leave it on for nearly a minute. Funny how sleds differ.

UPDATE:
spoke to the yamaha mechanic tonight, made sure the choke wasn't sticking, and then told me to shut the choke off completely after startup. just use the throttle to keep it idling. will give it a shot, cause it can't hurt. otherwise with a new set of plugs, went for a 50 mile rip today and the sled still makes me smile! have to flip a coin everytime i want to ride. just not ready to give up my viper!

another thing, the plugs were completly wet AND black. the thing i don't get is how well it runs when up to temp!

I'm on my 2nd set in a little over 1000 mi. My mechanic told me theese things love the choke ,showed me how to start mine. Hold on to your hats I leave mine on 1/2 choke for almost 5 to 8 min. My sled loves the cold ,hates warm air.
I start on full choke when it starts to stumble I go to 1/2, blip the gas and rpm comes up just under clutch engagement. when rpm drops I go to 0 choke and blip the throttle if it bogs ,back on the choke a little. Only time I had trouble is when its above 30.

Never had any issues with the plugs after 1500 miles. With a flo commander installed a choke a hardly needed. I leave it at full chocke for about 3 secs and back it almost to nothing.

I start mine EXACTLY the same way as NOMOREBRAHPP and works very well for me when cold (-20C).
However when it is warmer (-5C) it wants to sputter at half choke so I turn it off almost right away and keep the RPM up around 2500 with the trigger.
The weather is very sunny here and can see the snow starting to melt! Doesn't take long to go this time of year :cry:

I had the same issue with 4 plugs in the 1st 600 miles. I then learned it was from frequent cold starts and stops while still closed. After I learned this(the hardway at $5 for each plug), I have only started the sled and allowed it to WARM UP before shutting it off. Since then no fouled plugs.
