Hi Guys,
Some of you may remember my complete rebuild last year, the sled ran awesome all year after I practically had every bolt out of it for the first time, pulled engine twice, etc. I put on 1800 miles my personal best in a season.
Only issue I had was oil burning, right out of the gate I was getting around 350 miles before the light came on and I was a qt low. It was darn near that the rest of the season about 320-350 miles before the light was on.
I run a filter set up, with crankcase EVAC you can kind of see it in my avatar. I run 0w40 Mobile 1 oil but had to add 5w30 a couple times on the trail as I was not expecting to have to bring my own.
When I got the engine back the compression was perfect (I forgot the numbers) and the leakdown was 4% on all cylinders exactly even which is wierd so maybe it was a bum test.
I just got a compression tester and will test it again to see if it even.
When the engine was out we measured the pistons and rings and they were within spec and good. The only thing I could guess is the new head I had to get to replace my old one which was used with 880 miles has bad guides, but we mesaured that and the end play was in spec on the random sample we took, honestly we didn't check all of them I think it was around 5 guides.
Any ideas from the techs on why it would drink oil? I wouldn't be concerned if it even took a qt every 800 miles but every 350 is a bit much.
I never sprayed after the rebuild either so its not the nitrous, I still have my filled bottle as I just didn't find my self needing to spray and I wanted to sign off on the engine build first.
Thanks guys!

Nope all NA when not spraying. Like I said though never sprayed.
When I did the engine I did the Ted J torque procedure in prep for trail boost. I'm not going to boost this engine till I figure out why its drinking oil.

plug color
how are your plugs look like, are they all the same color or is there one with a lot of carbon on it.it will tell you witch cylinder is burning oil.another thing you could look at, is your exhaust port in the cylinder head for oil leaks from the valves.check your intercooler (turbo sled)for oil inside it,if it does the oil comes from your turbo.hope this will help you.

Try to disconnect the EVAC to see if oil is sucked out of the crank case and burned in the motor. My '03 did use oil with the ECP and EVAC installed, can't remember how it was on my '05 with ECP and EVAC as I didn't run it much because I also had the turbo sled at that time.

Yea my 03 used about 1 Qt every 800-1000miles or so but like you said 350miles... That is way too much some thing is not right.

I'm hoping that the 0W30 oil and the crankcase EVAC is sucking the oil out on cold start up. I will disconnect for this year. I know of one guy who was using the exact oil (mobile 1 0w30) and evac and using the same 1qt every 350 miles, and disconnected his EVAC and got over 1000 miles on a qt, praying this works, otherwise new motor time...

i gotta tell ya my 03 used oil from day 1.i lifted a ring land from nitrous a few years ago.did a full rebuild, new piston, new updated rings, sent the block out to get fixed, set ring end cap perfect.that thing still uses oil.i mostly lake ride so it's running 8000-10000 rpm all day long.thats gotta use some oil

Yeah I know but the issue I have is it didn't use a drop before the rebuild adn that was going through a lot of nitrous...arg the issues I had with my local mechanic. Never again... sending the engine to only someone I trust like BPE.

yea i remember all the problems you had.jim @bpe helped me out alot during my rebuild.thank god for him or i would still be looking at nuts/bolts scratching my head.now maybe my problem is break in time,i don't do it.when it was new i ran it hard the 1st night.

Kinger , I leaked down a 2005 Warrior last winter with 5500miles and it had barely 2% leakdwon on all 4 holes , engine was stock and never touched . 4% leakdown for a new rebuid sounds too high .

That is interesting. I am going to get a leak down tester if I can find a 10mm one and do mine again. be good to monitor before and after the season. This year she is getting a healthy dose of Nitrous!

4% leakage is just fine, thats not a problem. You said you had the engine apart for rebuild my guess is the a oil ring rail may have been folded over when installing a piston, should be able to see a spark plug or 2 with signs of oil. There is no reason to disconnect the breather, if oil is coming out of it, you have problems. Better take it apart now. Forget the nitrous at least till you find the problem!!!!! Get rid of the crankcase evac whatever that is, you don't need it . Get real!!!!!!!!!!! After reading your post agin thats more than likely the problem Good Luck!
