I so appreciate this site and the guys on it. THANKS FOR YOUR INPUT in advance.

It is likely the reason I bought an APEX and not a RENEGADE.

I bought an 06 GT used with 600+ miles, now 1400 + :D good week of vacation! :D I really like the sled but some concerns below. I am coming off of 02 800 XCSP 5000 miles and a Yamaha XTC Deluxe (9000+ miles)

The APEX has a big boy spring, auxillary hand warmers, rear heat exchager, 6 inch bergstroms, 3/16 inch shim, .

Pros
4 stroke- ( no smoke, oil, smooth, POWER, MPG) :4STroke:
E start, Reverse
Fuel injection
ride -controlled smooth not "plush" soft ;)!
handling -I like rider forward more all the time
Compression braking -getting used to it :ORC

Con's :ORC
HIGH pitched howl :o| :o| - can't tell if track / tunnel harmonics & or exhaust, I needed earplugs this is a problem IMHO
COLD no windshield to speak of for hands or body
Heavy ski pressure

plans
lighten ski spring presure
change transfer rod to more transfer / less ski pressure
144 down the middle
Decrease comp damp on skis -seems very firm, never close to bottom
mid windshield

QUestions

What to do about the high pitched HOWL? :o| THis really bothers me as I frequently put on 200 + days and I would like to not need ear plugs.
\
I was hoping for 4 stroke quiet unles on the throttle, now it screams on the throttle and howls on cruise.

ANY THoughts?

What windshield?

Any other comfort long mile Ideas.
;)!

Thanks
Yamadoo :rocks:

I just got used to the noise. I don't even notice it anymore. I did at first just like you have. I also went and bought a medium windshield. Not as attractive as the stock shield but for me it works 100% better. I left my handguards on (they can hit the medium shield at full turn) but my hands didn't get cold this past weekend. 400+ miles in some pretty cold temps at night. The medium is the only shield right now for the RTX you have more options on the GT.

Same here, the howl is anoying to say the least.Under 45 mph the exhaust note and track howl is very noticable. I've been wondering if the Apex Mnt. exhaust tips were installed (they turn out) maybe the harmonics of the exhaust would not be as great. I need to post that question at the Mnt site and ask if they are experiencing the harmonics as well.

In regards to the track howl i think that is always there on all sleds but because there is practially no engine noise on this due to the pipes being at the back you now hear it.. I came from an 01 SRX to an 03 Rx1 and i noticed it bigtime. But to be honest, track howl is imensly better than engine noise.. ;)

I agree, I got used to mine in a couple trips. would never go back to 2 strokes!!!!

I talked to White Knuckles about a quite exhaust a couple years ago & they said no one would buy it. If enough of us are interested maybe they can build a quite one that does not lose power. I would pay money to get rid of the noise. I do not have glass packs on my car anymore either. :drink:

I agree..

You get usto the howl after a long time... like 3 sleds long.. LOL

The apex is louder than the Rx-1 and you notice it when riding..

Thanks Guys I would love a Stealth black GT.

The Harmonics- track and exhast, feel the tunnel it feels like a tuning fork.- I am talking about are way louder than Normal track howl of the Yamaha's, Polaris, Ski doo's I have owned . IMHO

I can't hear the exhaust howl over the super charger wistle lol.

Ive never noticed a track howl on my sled... Its the hum from the engine at 6000-7000 rpms at a constant speed that i hear..

Buzzes in your ear..

If you let it get at you.. it will... Try not to think about it and it wont..

I agree , thats what I always felt it was , the motor at the Rs you mentioned, not the track.

The track howl is a well known problem that Yamaha refuses to acknowledge. There are reams of posts on this subject. It seems to occur at low rpm(5000-5500). Riders that ride above that all the time don't notice the problem as much. studdog

The howl is really a harmonic noise not necessarily track related. Modifying track parts doesn't seem to improve it. studdog

I know of a couple guys who went from Rev's to the Apex who hated the loud howl of the track/engine. They now ride with those cheap ear plugs that gun owners use when they target practice. They say they work awesome and now enjoy the ride instead of listening to that drone. I don't mind the noise from My Apex, it doesn't bother me at all. Maybe that comes from years on Cats and I'm used to lots of noise.
