There is a service bullitin from Yamaha. Certain models had wiring routed incorrectly. Call your dealer.

Anybody have a copy or information about the bulletin? My dealer is 50 miles away round trip so if its something I can fix myself I would like to.
Thanks again!

Pretty much what you have to do is pull the fuel tank and most likely the reverse wires melted on the exhaust which is right on the right of the head and you will see it. Pretty easy fix but if your under warrany the dealer will take care of it.

Ok- thanks for the info. I'll check it out because it's probably my fault- I changed spark plugs last weekend and had the tank out.

no melted wires
I spent all day tearing down my Phazer and looking for melted wires and didnt find anything. I looked at the wiring diagram in the manual and checked both wires that go to the reverse and neutral switches (one white with red stripe and one white with blue stripe) and both looked fine.
I hate going to my dealer because they are pretty far away and knowing them they will want to charge me because it is out of warranty but it looks like I have no choice.
I thought I bought a new snowmobile so I wouldnt have to work on it but I guess I was wrong

It's a known service issue, they shouldn't charge you a penny!

fixed the reverse
I fixed my reverse problem and the code 88 is gone
There is a white and red stripe wire that that goes from the position switch located on the gear housing next to the exhaust manifold that runs inside the harness and ends up connected to the engine control box by the battery. the switch and control box are only about 12" apart but the wiring runs through a harness all over in the engine compartment so somehere in the harness is a short. I just ran a wire directly from the switch to the control box and it works again.
