i got a question guys..and yes I used the search first...what is the advantages to just using the 8dn belt and the osp clutch adjuster??...my LTX is completely stock motor and clutch....thanks

I did find I got better belt life , but that does not seem to be the case with everyone.
experiment and see how it works for you.
 
From my expeirence and from exhaustive testing with Mr Sled and friends from TY last year testing clutch setups, we found that the 8dn had better, more conststant compound, more consistent sizing, and gave better results on any given day over a wide range of trail conditions. Couple that with afore mentioned price and the fact that most Yamaha riders and dealers stock have stock piles of the belt, it's a no brainer.
 
I've had good belt life on both belts. But I never had stock clutching on my sled since after the first 100 miles.
I have ~4300 miles on the sled now.

My first 8JP I changed out at ~1700 miles. It didn't blow. I like to change my belts around 1500 miles regardless.
Ran the second 8JP ~800 miles then started the 8JP 8DN belt testing thing.
Ran the 8DN ~1800 miles. No problems.

Going to run an 8JP this season. I have a brand new one sitting on the shelf.

My experiences. Both belts work good for me.

The 8JP seems more responsive. The 8DN pulls a couple of more MPH on ideal conditions.

Oh and I do have the OSP adjuster. Works great. Nice and easy to adjust belt deflection.

One of our members stood up for the 8jp for a long time until he had an 8jp EXPLODE....lol. Exploding belts are not healthy for your crankshaft.
 
My 8jp was not a issue till I started holding it wide open for extended runs. Then it slipped and was very inconsistent. Never blew one though.

Belt residue.......

Your going to see belt residue with any belt you run, but the ones that run the 8JP belt that have me look at their sled or work on their sled have lots of belt residue and blackening of the clutch sheaves.

One slightly used 8jp belt for sale. This was on a turbo, 2nd one that blew last year, both belts were used belts that had miles on them but only lasted 200 miles on the turbo. First season, all stock with a clutch kit I had great luck with the stock belt, no weird speed issues or inconsistency, swapped out first belt at 500 miles just because and the second one went the rest of the season with 1800 miles and the last ride of the year it was up over 100 mph, but granted it was on a stock sled, the 8jp isn't holding up for me now with the added power, I finished out last year with 800 miles on an 8dn, no it doesn't look new, it's certainly showing signs of wear, but 800 miles on a 200hp machine with a lot of hard launches every time in ride it, I'm more than happy with that. With the 8dn and 8jp on mine with the turbo I felt zero difference in performance, and we ran a full day doing back to back testing with a radar and timers and neither of the belts stood out as being better as far as quickness or top speed, the 8jp just wouldn't hold up for me.

You have to adjust the shims on the back of the secondary to get it to the right height. Or buy the OSP adjuster on sale now for $69 they are great and make belt changes a two finger job. 8DN is a harder compound and creates less dust and seems to be more consistent when power added. Like Stud said above with a turbo you will find the 8JP less than dependable. When I went to 252 hp I was going through 3 belts in a weekend. It was like riding a true CAT.

Yep our first Viper had enough belt dust to bind up the clutch with less than 200 miles on it. Switched to 8dn and never looked back
 
I've been using the gates carbon fiber belt on the asphalt with good results so far. rpm is a little higher then the 8dn but with it being the right length i'm getting the 0verdrive out of the clutch I lost with the 8dn. Not sure how durable long term its going to be but its holding 250 + hp pretty good.

The gates for me on the turbo pulled a consistent 4-6 mph faster top speed than the 8dn or 8jp, but for trail riding it would get too hot and grippy and after about 15 mins of riding it would start to pull down rpm and wasn't peppy anymore, but for any type of high speed runs or perfect trails I'd throw the gates on cuz it is a fast belt
