How do you remove the a-arm boot retainers with the triangle shaped recess in the head?

I believe the boot should slip over the "pin". Just pull the rubber around them.

Are you talking about the rivets, one on each side? If so I just drill them out and replace with an automotive plastic push pin. They have held up great and are easily removable.

You can actually work the rubber out from under the rivets then stretch the boot back over the rivet head to reinstall. No need to remove the rivets.
