A Really bad noise

When locking up the brakes to make a sliding turn in the trail, or after making a sudden stop, my '05 Warrior makes a really bad noise, like gears grinding, when trying to get going. The engine turns, but the sled doesn't go. I need to lift the rear end to get the track spinning before I can get the sled to move.
The last time, at around 500 miles, I found the belt was so loose I could remove it without pushing in the secondary.
Could the noise be just a loose belt, and why was the belt so stretched out at only 500 miles, or could there be something seriously wrong inside the engine?
 
CHECK YOUR SECONDARY CLUTCH, IT MAY BE STICKING OPEN

Come on. Give me a brake. That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard.
 
Over the years I developed a technique for playing around like that. I squeeze the brake hard - just locking the track for a split second, then ease of a hair so the track turns a turn or so and then lock it up again.

It's pretty easy to do and you can do it very quickly.

By locking it up, the motor slows down and the primary disengages. Then letting the track turn a turn or so closes the secondary. Then locking it up is fine since the belt is already in the right spot to start from a stop.

All sleds are like this, at least everything since my 1966 Olympic that I've owned (many different sleds).

To see what's going on, remove the belt guard, lift the track off the ground, spin the track to 40 mph or so and lock up the brake. Of course wear a bullet proof vest, a helmet, and a light bomb suit while doing this so you can't sue me if you take it too far...

Who said to not use the brake? If It turns your crank use It all you want, but save yourself some grief and let It roll for at least the last few feet so the secondary can do It's shift. 8)

I'm sure he did not mean it that way, but that is how it came out to me!
 
only time i will lock my brake up is going downhill in deep deep snow when the engine braking doesnt do enough. engine comes to life without a problem at the bottom of the hill. on the trail i would never slide into a turn. probably terrible for the track to just lock up and slide across the trail
