Accessory 12V location

Where on the Rx-1 is good place to pick up a switched 12V source? I know I could wire directly to the battery but would rather have the power cut when the key is off.

PS: this will be for GPS

I used the blue/white under the handle bar cover, it goes to the head light switch. I run 16 LED's and a heated visor from here with no ill effects. I ran a ground straight to the battery because I didn't want to mess with the handlebar grounds which seems to always lead to problems...

So basically just one terminal spliced in from the blue/white wire, the other wire on the 12DC port going to the battery negative?

Have any of you found a nice 12V accessory outlet that is similar to the RS Venture / standard Yamaha 12V DC outlet complete with the rubber socket cover?

I hate those cheapy jobbies with the plastic inserts, no covers, etc.

My buddy just bought one for $8.00 at radio shack.... Covered.. Looks as nice as the stock one does for around $34.00. MM.

Thats correct and if you find a good chassie ground at the handlebars you could use that, I just happen to have a ground going past the battery to my LED's

Tried the Cigarette Lighter sized socket and mating plug with adapter to RCA for Visor. Darned plug kept sliding back out and then visor had no power. If you go this route, you may want to make sure you get a plug with a LED on it indicating that it is still powered. Otherwise just skip the socket, plug adapter and wire to the battery. Over the years with this, that's what I ended up doing anyway.

OK, got the socket from Radio Scrap, now I need a good wire that I can tap into up by the headlight/gauge harness s if possible. I would like to have my entire GPS setup confined to the hood/gauge area since my RAM mount will be fastened to the area immediately left of the main gauge pod and I do not want to string wires between the hood and the tank area to do it.

I will mount the 12V connection under the hood to keep things clean looking, just need a "hot" wire near the light harness.

Any suggestions?

It was plastic unfortunately, but I'm mounting it under the hood now anywa, so I really don't mind.

I'm trying to find out where people are tapping into relayed 12V power down by the footrest, I think it is a blue wire coming from one of the big relays there?

I just did the exact same thing to my sled.I used the 12v accessory plug from radio shack plastic housing with rubber plug.Looked for part number but I threw the package away.I mounted it to the left of the speedometer as high as I could to clear the headlight underneath.

If you untape the wires going into the speedometer(under the hood)you will see a blue white wire and mine has a factory splice in the blue/white wire,under more tape.I just sodered the ride wire to the factory splice and taped it back up.

For the ground I unpluged the left headlight unsnapped cover and released the plug in so I could remove it from the plastic connector,then just soldered the black wire to the metal plug in.

Thanks again man, I tied into the blue/white wire in the instrument harness, then picked up a ground on the black wire off one of the headlight harnesses.

Works great, 12V outlet gets power only when sled is running, just the way I like it.
