Adding Vents to Viper Engine Compartment

I pulled the shield by the primary clutch and used a dremel tool to cut some of it out. Lots of hot air get pushed out of the new hole, I was surprised. I also have the knee vents, they let out a lot of heat. I have 7000 and those cat clutches run really hot. So I’m trying to open the sled plastics up a bit to get some cool air in there.
I can tell you from my own personal experience that getting the excess heat out is very important. Running a turbo and building up heat under the hood that was never designed to be there can cause strange things to happen. Aside from using a snorkel on the turbo intake temps were way to high even on cooler days.
It did take a bit of skill to cut the panels and lay every thing out properly but the benefits were well worth the time and money. I opted for a full carbon fiber vent frame which enabled me to cut out the entire are behind the vent. The carbon fiber frame restores the structural integrity of your panel once it is installed over the cut out.
 
Since we are in this topic of vents, what’s everyone’s Intake Air Temps look like with extra vents? Mine likes to run 50-60*f above outside temps while trail riding. I was out this weekend in the lower 40’s and the intake temps were hovering around 100*. If the frogskin on the front gets plugged up they climb another 20-30*! So far I’ve only cut the foam on the knee panel to let air out of the clutch area, looking at adding vents to that panel. Also
Thinking about some kind of manual vent to open on trails and close while powder riding like the old Phazers had in the nose cone.

I cut out all the foam. All of it. I don’t have a turbo though. And on the exhaust side I made the upper hole in the vent panel bigger. I did add heat tape to the inside of panel on the exhaust side where the foam was. But the foam on the clutch side is only there to reduce noise, as far as I can tell. Taking the foam out allows for more room and airflow. If you look at your vents the foam (especially the lower vents) almost totally blocks the vent hole.

And if there’s no foam the mice won’t be as excited to make your sled a home in the off season!
 
I installed the Mo Flow knee vents. A lot of heat comes out of them. I haven't checked my air intake temps or the temps of my clutches, oil tank or chain case but the more heat leaving the engine compartment the better.

Are you still happy with these Moflow vents?
Did they end up causing any damage to the knees of your Klim bibs?
I absolutely love them. They have not caused any damge to my Klim bibs and in fact the softness of the panels with the MoFlows on them has made the issue of knee soreness from pushing my knees into them a non issue. Actually comfortable. I must have 10000 mi on them or more by now. Never even think of them unless its sub zero and they are warming my legs. That makes them a GREAT mod!
