I finally got to put some hard mile's on the sled this weekend but had a problem with the evac. After riding hard all day and putting on around 100 miles, my sled started popping and shooting flames out the back and would not run. I imediatly opened the hood and emptied the plastic tee and hardly anything came out, then I noticed there was a little frost around the botttom of the filters. I cleaned those off and put some gas line antifreeze in the tank and it still took me about 20 min to get it running right. Once this was done it ran great until the next day when it did it again. Now, I just want to let you know that I empty the tee every chance I get, and I always empty around a little over a cap full of water. Could the carbs be sucking up the water and making it not run right ? I love the kit and can notice the power but dont want to keep worring about this popping crap. Also do you think I hurt anything with all this popping coming out the exhaust ? The sled pulls very hard and runs great when it's running good, but this has happened to me 3 times allready. Can some one please give me a fix for this crap !!

thanks for any help in advance. :D

Mr Sled is trying to keep all the ECP air kit questions dedicated to its own forum. See it on the forum listings page.

To answer (possibly) your question about the running condition...It sounds to me like your T.O.R.S. (Throttle Over Ride System) is kicking in. That will make the flames come out of the exhaust and backfire like mad.

Were you riding in powder and was the temp in the single digits? If so, mine did this last Saturday. I concluded that my filters let too many ice crystals through and something was freezing up.

Ok, I am finally back on here now. 1st of all I never knew that there was an ECP forum or I would have put this post there, and second, if Tom was going to move this how come it did not say moved in the other forum ? I was looking for it and looking for it and decided to go back to the e-mail and let it open it and found out it was here, a notice would have been nice that it had been moved. I don't use the e-mail's to go to the topic because my computer takes forever to open them that way. Anyway's, why is the TORS kicking in ? I mean I would be driving down a trail at 60 mph and all of a sudden it just dies and starts popping. Is it going to hurt anything by bypassing the TORS ? Like I said this has happened 3 times allready and I'm getting sick of it. I just don't know why that would be kicking in all the time. :o|

oh yeah, I do have the prefilters on the air filters. Also, what are these seals that everyone is talking about blowing out, did I do it with the backfiring ? :o|

Unless you have a massive amount of oil leaking from your valve cover, you did not lose the "seals". These "seals" everyone is talking about are actually the camplugs that seal the camshaft line bored area to the valve cover. Look at the end of your valve cover and you will see 2 black rubber plugs. They are 1 piece made with the valve cover gasket.

The reason I mentioned the TORS is because that sounds like what you are describing. It is unlikely that the air kit is running fine for 20 miles and then horrible for 5. Something, in my opinion is malfunctioning like the TORS switch. Bypass it. If the problems goes away, then you will need to replace the TORS switch or just leave it bypassed. Either the TORS or look at your sparkplug caps/stick coils and see if any arcing looks like it is occuring deep down inside the sparkplug well. I like to reinstall the rubber flap over the top of the engine to prevent snow and water from getting down inside the sparkplug well.

Hope this helps you out.

Freddie

Thanks Freddie, I have already checked the wires and the coils to see if that was it, and everything looked great. I will bypass the TORS and see if it happens again, this thing pulls all the way through with the kit and the exhaust and only 144 picks. I did not get beat once last weekend at Tip Up Town. I ran a T-cat, ZR800, 04 WARRIOR, 03 REV 800, AND A GOOD RUNNING MACH 700, The Mach blew his belt trying to keep up with me.
Also, I think the 165 mains with the red springs are working great.

Thanks for all the help.

I don't run an ECP kit but have had similar problems. I have an '03 with a carb heater shutoff (for the engine coolant) and here is what I have found. If the coolant is completely shut off to the carbs (to help warm engine starting) they will freeze up and cause the engine to sputter (sometimes die at idle). This is caused when the dewpoint temp and ambiant air temps are the same. The air velocity through the carb cause humidity in the air to freeze. This can happen on hot summer days (that is why you see top fuel dragsters being sprayed with de-icer after a burnout. Now I just leave the coolant valve cracked slightly to prevent carbs from icing up. If you pull the filters when this happens you will see the frost in the carb. It looks like a freezer wall sometimes.

Yamanator, What year RX do you have?? I had the exact same problem in my '03, be going 60-70 down a road or trail and all of a sudden popping and flames shooting out of the exhaust. I'd shut it down for a few minutes and it would run fine for a while and then happen again. It ended up being a frayed wire up in front of the motor that was rubbing and shorting out occassionly. This was actually an "update" from Yamaha, once this was corrected I never had the problem again.
Just a thought...

I will find out on Oct 1st when I take the sled into the dealer to have the Tores swtich checked, and have them replace that bearing that everyone is replacing. They told me they could probably get r done under warrenty with the extended servive plan that I have. I don't plan on messing with it and the sled now has 2600 miles on her with no problems, but I want it fixed before she blow's.
Oh yeah, my sled is a 03 RX-1 in black.

:D

I had some issues like that on my last ride. I had tightened up the slack in my throttle cable and it kicked on the TORS. Backed off on the tension a bit, and problem was solved.
