Was wondering how you like your Collett Platinum 900 communicator. How much range do you really get in the woods or in a really hilly area? I had the original communicators a few years ago and to say they sucked, would be a compliment. I only them about 3 weeks, and since they have sat in my garage cupboard. Are the new ones any better? Thanks.
Collette Communicators
The 900 series is much better but the battery life is about 8 hours before a recharge.
Better to have direct power fom the sled.
Operable distance varies by terrain, on average I see about 1/2 to 1mile

I have had them since 1999 and think they are great The problem is mot people dont take time to read the directions and really relate to them and adjust them right It took 1 day to do this right and u need feedback from the other rider,I have seen 1/2 mile in the woods and sometimes less depending on terrain I think they are great for safety reasons and to chat when stopped or to tell yabud u wnat to takea leak instead of trying to pull up along side and him think u want to race and go crazy I am sure the new ones are better but the older style like i have do work well They have goodd customer service there also and turn around time is good

I think they work pretty well but could use some improvements. We all use them but when mine broke in Hearst Ont, my wife went nuts. She could no longer communicate with me. (Sometimes she gets a little loud and I have to unplug her.)

My buddies and I purchased six of them last winter and they worked perfectly. We sent ours up to collett to be converted to a club channel and we feel that it really adds to the safety factor when approaching on-coming riders on the twisties. The new snow phone is the same as the Platnium 900 less the cell phone / radio adapter crap that we never used. Collet has also sent out about 1000 radio beacon to be mounted on groomers. These things really work and believe me you know where those groomers are when equipted. Collet will send the beacons out at no charge to your club if you are interested. Range across a large lake is about 1 mile, but that works.

I/we also ride with them. Our little club has our own channel, so if things get busy, we switch. Ranges are limited to about a 1/2mile after that it's like talking through a bad cell phone connection. They are excellent when riding with a bunch of buddies and you hear "traffic" or "sleds approaching" hard left/hard right, etc. Excellent safety wise.

what kind of clearity would I be looking at? Nextel two way, or cell phone. My brother-in -law wants us to get them and I have a hard time spending that kinda money. However I do like the the safety end alot.
Thanks for the feedback. A friend I ride with alot just bought an Apex along with a SKI-DOO Modular helmet. Will they work with a Modular helmet that has the weird rubber mouth piece you breath into? By the way the blue color that he got on his Skidoo helmet matches the Yamaha blue almost perfect.
I would get them, but I would save some money and buy the new snow phone version. I never used the cell phone part. Clarity is along the FRS motorola 2 way radios without the distance. Make sure when you order you tell them it's for a modular, I believe they're alittle different as far as the mic end. They show it on their website.
Here's my two cents...I've been using Communicators from Collett, almost from day one. I love them and wouldn't ride without them. However, here's a few observations.
1) As said above (by DaveyBoy), learn how to use them BEFORE you ride! I can't stress that one enough!
2) Make sure EVERY sled in your group uses resistor plugs...this is almost as important as learning how to use them first!
3) DO NOT expect cell phone clarity....especially as the distance betweeen sleds increases. However, our group generally does not use them for idle chit-chat....if you hear a garbled message in our group, it generally means to be on the lookout....i.e. about to stop or a trail hazard or sleds approaching.
The new, less expensive 900 units are definitely the way to go for first timers and veterans as well....I've never used all the "other" features.
Repeat observations one and two over and over! After you get used to them, you won't ride without them again!
