Obviously Powder coating would be the way to go but I have a bunch of black automotive paint and primer from a recent project and I was thinking about painting my rails. Would it hold up?

I haven't painted rails, but I have tried painting other parts in my skid (brackets, cross arms etc.) with poor results. They seem to get chipped very easily from gravel and other debris. I don't think I would try the rails, but that is just me. If you do, please report back what you used and how it worked.

I mulled that over myself and decided just to polish them . A major pain in the a$$ but it does look sweet .

I painted my aftermarket bumper and it held up the whole season with no issues. The key is surface prep. and take the time to do it right. If the surface is not prepared properly, you will have issues.

If you are going to go through the trouble of stripping the parts from the skid, might as well get it powder coated. Paint will get chipped in no time.

Did mine myself:
Here is a closeup after a season of riding. Kinda like how you can see the polish under the P-coat
A good shot of the whole skid on one side that is. Both front and rear arms were done with Extream Chrome and top coated with Translucent Candy Blue, Mounting brackets on the skid are gloss black. Rails were polished to a mirror then hit with Translucent Candy Blue
