On the snowest forum someone mentioned they moved their 03RX1mtn steering column forward a few inches and experienced better balance. My sled is pretty light now, and handles tons better than stock, but I've noticed while climbing, with the nose is up, in the air it's pretty touchy. Most of the weight I've removed is off the rear of the sled and I could imagine that going a little "rider forward" could put me closer to the sled's CG and make handling more predictable. Maybe even get some of the Apex benefits without shelling out the big bucks. Almost looks like the steering column could rotate forward a few inches without screwing up too much structure. Anyone tried it?

I Havent done it yet,but I plan to. Also have lots of weight off the back end.Would be great to know if some one has done it and how.

Yup guys it's a good mod. Scott from Diamond S has done all his sleds that way. Only trouble I believe is the fitment of the body work. So be prepared for some custom tank shroud and hood combos.

Well I took a shot at moving my column. Turns out to be pretty simple. No money spent and a few hours work. Remains to be seen whether it will hold up. It moved forward about 4 1/2 inches and didn't require too much hacking, and I could switch it back without too much trouble. I used all existing parts except for a couple little pieces of steel stock. If anyone wants more detail PM me. I obviously have too much time on my hands!

Looks pretty solid. Now maybe route some guages down to fill the hole in the fuel can cover??? 1 more thing to do this summer.

That looks great, I would like to see some more info on it. It looks almost too simple, running the post thru the support like that.

I was so impressed that I ran right out to the garage and started tearing it apart. I assume the steel stock you refer to is the angle cut pieces to mate the post blocks with the support column?? I wonder if there is a way to raise the entire assembly as well while you are doing it?

Are you cutting both the hood and the tank shroud?

Is your post a taller than stock, or does it just look like it after it was moved?

Thanks, Lance

I will likely do this to mine also, I would like to see someone elses done up to make sure they concur with the pictures posted here .........If I do mine I'll do some trick body shop type mods to the affected body pieces and get detailed pictures of the process.

Hmmm............the large hole left over where the steering column used to go through would make a nice place for an oversized Boost guage . ;)!

Man, that's sweet. Looks like the Genesis II chassis to me. Probably all Yamaha did was that mod, Vector front end and fuel injection. Looks to me like the guage pod might fit in the old hole if you moved the ignition to the other side and cut out for the pod. That would be cool and you'd actually be able to see the guages. Man, I wanna do it!!!! You should post this over on the RX shorty threads. Those guys would love it too. Nice way to get rider forward without shelling out $10,000.
