Snow and trail update for a few trails in the central U.P.,
The storm did us good! At my house, which is on the north shore of Lake Michigan in Manistique, we received 10 inches overnite and an additional 4 inches today and still snowing. We rode north from Manistique this morning, just 5 miles north of town received 14 inches. Met the groomer near the Jack Pine coming back from Shingleton, the trail was smooth and snow covered all the way to Shingleton. About 8-10 inches there.
Continued onto Miners Castle and then to Bear Trap. Munising has not started grooming any trails yet. They are supposed to start tomorrow? We then headed to Grand Marais. Met the Seney groomer on trail 8. Grand Marais trail system is in good shape with nice powder. Took the Lakeshore loop, had good snow on it. I would say they received close to a foot in the Kingston Plains/Grand Marais area. We then went down to Seney, by riding some "official" trails and some local trails. It was good all the way, we rode the ditch to bypass the swamp close to town.
Took a quick trip south to check on my place in Curtis. Curtis not grooming yet, but may start today. Bypassed the trails by riding the Lakes. Headed back north thru Seney to Shingleton and then south to Manistique and home.
Started to see a little sled traffic on 8 on our return trip. The trail was starting to get a little rough, but it was still snowing and is still snowing now at 7pm.
Bottom line is, Overall, I would rate the trails at a 6 or 7 out of 10. With some 10 spots for sure! Grand Marais and Seney trail systems are in good to above good shape shape considering the recent lack of snow. Munising trail system is going to be rough until they are groomed a few times. Schoolcraft County system north of the Jack Pine is good to above good. The Big Spring trail loop near Indian Lake was groomed today for the first time also, not sure how it is though.
I will be working in Marquette area tomorrow, it sounds like they received around a foot. I will report if that is not true. I think the ride this weekend in Gwinn should be good to go.
Hope this helps anyone on the fence deciding to come up or not.
