Apex Chain Case Problems

1 thing my dealer did seem to happen is that around 10.000kms chains seemed to fail/break and BOOM their goes the chaincase, 3 '05 last season!!!
on stock sleds.

I too always change my chain and usually the upper gear every 10,000km (as well as all the bearings and seals). I also change the gear lube with fully synthetic every 3000km or less (more often).

The chain in my 05 RX-1 with 10,000km still "looked" perfect and hadn't stretched/worn much. It was changed anyway. The next one still "looked" perfect at 20,000km too.

I haven't had a problem with mine , even running a turbo , I wouldn't hesitate getting a yammi !

How long do you really hold it wide or close to wide open with the tubo?

1/2 an hour? more?

Actually, no I wasn't really serious.

I do seriously wonder, due to turbo guys being afraid of blowing their track/engine/etc., if the amount of heat energy or heat released in the chaincase per hour is less than a very aggressively ridden stock sled. It might be that someone who rides their stock sled wide open on every straight away and from corner to corner with threshold breaking before each turn might actually heat up their chaincase more than you for example.

BTW, I can't get the video to play for some reason. There seems to be no sound and then it stops after about 2-3 seconds of play.

Congrats.

What did you decide to do (if anything) for the chaincase?

It's funny the effect a couple of new 800s in the ride group has. :tg:

I knew you were going to buy a new machine this year, but I'm thinking you should have got a Venture just like Wilsons so you guys can match in the summer and winter.

:jump:

You're are going to let me ride that Apex tho right?>?

I heard he could beat that 800 of yours with the old machine. Guess he will have to get used to waiting for you at the trail intersections now. :tg:

video worked great for me..

MAN YOU EAT THAT HILL FOR LUNCH..

Im a firm believer.. that just because one or two people have a problem doesnt mean everyone is going to have one.. Ive held my sled wide open for a very long time (several times) never had a failer.. but i was paranoid and switched to synthetic oil mid season..

I have issues now

Because of the info on the site, I was keeping an eye and a nose out, for any type of smell or leak.

At one point, I thought I could smell gear oil.

I pulled the dipstick, and no oil.

I carried some chaincase oil with me and filled it back up. I didn't see any fluid in the side panels, but there was a light oily haze over the hood of my sled.

I called my dealer and told them that I would be needing the chaincase cover update.

I took the sled to the mechanic today and asked him to look everything over well.

He called me back and said the oil was black and sludgey and a bearing was out of it.
He is going to rip it apart tomorrow and see how the rest looks.

Crap, I wanted to ride this weekend!!

For what it's worth, I just had a catastrophic chain case failure on my 06 RTX after lots of high speed running on railroad grades in the Lake Gogebic area. I was doing 105 on the speedo when it went.

Going to the dealer tomorrow, but I can say that I didn't have any indication it was going to go. 600 miles on the sled this season, 2000 total on the sled. Completely destroyed the chain case cover, throwing pieces of the chain everywhere. It got so hot that the foam on the side panels caught fire. Can't tell what internal damage is at the moment because I jammed as much snow in there as I could to put the fire out!

I almost did the same thing last year on lake G. I was racing a guy on a new cat 800 from the north all the way to the south (7mi or so) wide open the whole way. I checked the oil at the end of that pull and there was only about 2 oz. of black sludge left in the chain case.I check my oil every day,and I have no idea where that oil went. I never have to fill between changes, but i did run the oil close to 3000 mi. ,so mabe i just needed to cange the oil more often.
