Ok getting a new sled just waiting to see what new comes out with yammi. Right now its either a Nytro or Apex. I have rode the Nytro and liked it. Little less on the power side but that can be changed. Now i have not rode an apex and have tried but with no luck. Dealer wont let me test/rent one and people i see on the mountain just plain wont let me ride it. SO if you had to compare an apex to any other sled for handling characteristics what would it be. Currently i ride a REV and cant stand the M-series so hopefully its not like a cat.

A few years ago I was sitting in the Cooke City Cat and Yamaha shop. I was getting ready to pick up my new 162 M-7 and a Yamaha service rep was at the shop. We were talking about how the M-7 works and comparing it to the Yamaha line-up. He told me that the Apex was very close to the m sled and of course I was a bit skeptical. Well I sold my m7 the next year to someone that just had to have it and I wanted to build my turbo rx1. So the next spring we went back to Cooke City, and I rented a M8 and what a disapointment. My dads stock 03 rx1 would out do that sled hands down. So after building my RX1 I wanted to get a stock sled that would be a great back-up sled. I didn't want a cat and tried the new 08 Rev but didn't like the ergos or the way it handled. I bought a Nytro MTX in Oct of 2007 and rode it through Feb 2008. I sold it to a guy who wanted to turbocharge one. the Nytro was ok but it didn't do what I wanted for a STOCK sled. I waited to see all of the new sleds and I ended up buying a new 2008 Apex MTX at the beginning of March 2008. Now I have over 700 miles on it. I'd actually prefer to ride my Apex over my RX1 most of the time. The sled is fun to ride it handles better and is actually easier to ride in softer fluffy snow. And as far as being close to the M7, the service rep was right. The M7 was kind of like a trials sled you could make it do just about anything. The apex will almost do the same things you just have to commit to it. You really have to plan your route and just go for it. The apex is heavier and you'll notice the weight difference between it and the Nytro, but the power and performance take care of the weight issue. Handling isn't too far off of the orig rev chassis and is really responsive to input. I'm really wishing that the 2010 Apex has 160 hp and is turbo charged or supercharged so it keeps its horespower at elevation. That would be perfect.

How about a side by side comparison. What would you think an Apex with a few mods would compete with as far as 2 strokes?
Basically want a turbo but wont have it for at least 1 riding season. So would do a few mods but nothing major. Maybe 2-3grand worth.

I find they ride very similar. I spent a few hours on a nytro riding in meadows. from this experience i can tell you that the translation between the two is very similar except. the nytro requires very little input and feels less stable then the apex. I found the riding position a little more awkward and was constantly looking for the right place to put my feet on the nytro. But both of them great sleds. The nytro being a little easier to boon dock on. But the advantage of larger track more power Im on my second year on the apex and unless Yamaha comes out with a new improved version of it I will still be on it

here is why i bought an apex after years of riding 2 strokes and being stuck on the mtn. i wanted a reliable sled period all we hove done 2 our apexs is simmons gen 2 skis, put gas in them and ride man its nice. great power comfy on the trails climbs great decent in the powder the apex is just a great all around sled.and the first major service is at 25000 miles a valve adjust.imo if you want the most reliable fun to ride sled the apex is your new ride.and then when your ready can you say reliable booost turboooooooo

Thanks for all the input. I am so done with 2strokes just thinking about reliable power gets me excited. I do like to wrench on them time to time but id rather do it modding then repairing... Anyone know a place to rent an apex around the BigHorns? Or anywhere in wyoming really, or Cooke.

Apex comparisons
OK boys let's keep it real.......... . I'm not brand Loyal...I am honest and DIRECT with my comparisons! I bought the Apex for the most popular reason...dependability and consistency. I will agree that in 15" or more powder it can be a wonderful machine! Very manuverable for it's size and weight.... I love the grunt that the four stroke has..no two stroke compares to the instant power. I will however have to deflate some of the hot air here. The sled IS HEAVY...period... if your not an aggressive rider you'll not enjoy the sled. It handles remarkably well for weighing over 600lbs and 10 feet long but remember it's designed for the powder and this is where it excells. If you ride in rutted or firm or spring snow conditions at all you WILL HATE the Apex PERIOD. In harder conditions you feel every pound of the 600+ Apex . If your riding powder only, I would highly reccomend you test one out they are great but they WILL NOT climb with a stock REV 800HO that has a 151" track or longer in the steep and deep. If you go with a different rear skid and track with proper clutching they will be comparable but this is 3500.00 worth of extra's so don't be disappointed if it's not climbing with the 2 smokes. The quality is the best in the industry and the potential is great but be prepared to learn a different way of riding and understand it's limitations. cheers...

yeah i know there heavy... Im coming from a Summit 1000 so the weight wont really bother me that and im 250lbs ready to ride. So i dont seem to have a problem throwing around the sleds. Also i dont ride the trails AT ALL. Maybe 1mile each day before im off in the deep. I know they wont keep up with the new XPs them things are so damn light its amazing.. Im leaning more to the i KNOW i can go up everyday i want and not worry at all about whats going to break this time. I can deal with the power loss before i can afford the turbo. And after turbo i dont Pull Really narly chutes just the normal hills so wont need 400hp id like a reliable 275hp. The question is just not sure what 4stroke suits me either the Nytro or the Apex. Ive road the nytro just havent had a chance at the Apex. Ill be taking a trip to Cooke and renting one end of feb i think tho.

ummmm,
ive riden the 08 xp 163" and the summit 1000 163" and dont see alot of difference in hill climbing tp the apex .If you ride correctly then climbing with a apex 163" is doable. The power is there its just you need momentum before you start climbing the hill because the weight.
With a few mods like seat, exhaust, and lightened suspension parts the apex climbs real easy.
A apex at 500 lbs is unstopable period, remember power to weight.

Just to add,
my mates 08 xp 155" was the worst sled he never had it spent 2 months last year in the shop with all kinds of problems from electrical to bent tunnels to broken belts and two drive shafts. It was a total lemon, sure was light but i think they have too light with the design. Felt like a plastic toy at speed.

I love my Apex. Was great stock and even better with mods. Get boss or mtn mod seat, light weight exhaust (I have excell mtn light), mtn tamer rear suspension, loose the light pod, and you'll be in heaven. this is around $2500-$2900 and you shed around 90lbs.

Here goes if your going stocker and like climbing 163 XP will do very well if however your planning to go big these are my opinions, Boosted Nytro stock skid with camo extreme 162 will rock anywhere, throw and M10 174 on it and the sky is the limit and I mean that, my 162 camo mega diet boosted apex is a riot can't beat the power of big boosted apex. Nytro is alot more like a rev rider forward lots of stock ski pressure. Mods cost money you wont like either yammy stock for climbing.

At 250lbs I think you'd enjoy the stock apex more than the stock nytro. Another option is to buy a used boosted apex, there are some amazing deals out there.
