Your getting more motor in the apex, less weight in the RMK id say a rmk chassis with a apex engine
apex
well I bought a 07 apex but not a se because heard stories of people that didn't like the floats in the mountains they are awesome on trail sleds.
I haven't rode a new rmk yet but got over 150 miles on my 07 and it's awesome. If you ride in extreeem boondocking places it does get a little tiring by the end of the day but for meadows and climbing it's awesome.I would go with the apex.

Check on Dragon availability. The trail and Mtn. Dragon were produced in limited supply and most of them were snow checked this spring. The local dealer here is only getting about 3 for the floor. The rest were ordered.
That might make your decision a little easier.
If you'll do more climbing than boondocking get the Apex, but if boondocking is more likely go with the Dragon (if available), if not test ride a leftover M7. It's one of the best boondocking sleds made.
That says alot from someone that has never liked Cats. (furry or green)

i can't ever consider an artic cat....it is no possible, two of my friends have f7 and god the had so many problems simply incredible!! going back to polaris make me affraid too, i bought a xc 700 2002 and blew up the engine 3 times in 1700 miles...not such a good record. i purchaseda mtn lite phazer three weeks ago and i'm really satisfied with this little machine..impressive for a 500cc.....one of my buddy is a polaris dealer and he is offering me the rmk dragon for 12400$ canadian plus taxes and the yammie dealer offered me the mtn apex at 14000$ plus taxes including the reverse an¸d sea level package....wich is , ithink, two really good prices.....but my brain is telling me to go with the yamaha but my sixth sens is pushing me through the rmk dragon.....i guess a good night sleep will clarify all this........so reliability again fun??? will see!!
Turbo charge the phazer and you will be all set.

Ha!!!!!
I have a '05 RMKK 900 (supposably P.I.'s biggest SNAFU) that has has 1800 trouble free miles. As a matter of fact the wife's 900 RMK is the reason my RX-1 mtn has close to $9000 in mods. The 162" track was to make them even when climbing. P.I. definately knows how to lay more track on the snow. The SC install was a nail in the coffin to make sure the RMK stayed behind me
.Now to answer the orginal question. The wife and I are mostly boondocking types with about 15% hillclimbing for me (wife hates steep stuff). Based on my experience with the 900 RMK with some mild mods and my heavily modded RX-1 mtn I would take the Yamaha just for the simple fact that it is unmatched in reliability, durability and modability.
The RMK IQ chassis however is bar none the smoothest riding mtn sled I have ever ridden (including REV, M series, APEX, RX-1). If it had the quality finish (fit is as good as my RX-1) and durability of a Yamaha, I would definately buy one and throw a BD turbo on it.
However, until P.I. can find a better plastic for their body parts (or give the RMK owner a lifetime warranty for breakage) I will never buy another one. I had to replace the front bumper and entire belly pan assembly on my wife's sled after a tree encounter ( cost was $ 500). Now the side pannel on the clutch side, hood and dash assem. is broken from the sled riding up a embankment, doing a partial barrel roll and landing on it's side on the groomed trail at 40 MPH. Price for new parts from dealer quote is $750.
For a comparison; I came close to succesfully mowing down a tree last season with my SCRX-1mtn (see attached picture) with absolutely no damage. I have also hit a huge bolder lyin under 4' off snow with no damage other than the windshield when I went through it due to the sled stoppng dead in it's tracks and inertia controlling my 270 lb body.

I would say for boondocking (out of the box) go with the dragon.
Reliability go with the Apex, hands down!
I think with some mods the Apex can be better for boondocking but you will have to spend the $$$ to lighten it up.
