There are precisely two changes in the chain case from 03 through 09... the material that the chain case cover is made out of (I'm not sure if they changed the material of the back piece as well, but doesn't matter), later ones are made out of a magnesium alloy, earlier ones aluminum. The second is the location of the mounting holes for the mechanical brake which is for the purpose of accommodating a brake rotor of a different diameter. Note that the later version cover will still have the mount points for the 03 location, BUT, they are not drilled out. If this is necessary, you must drill and tap those mount points (and as I hear it, tapping mag is not fun), otherwise it is necessary to change out the hydraulic brake and the rotor, or stick with an 03 chain case cover.

FWIW ... I have an '06 Nytro that originally didn't have reverse. I purchased a reverse kit from a fellow TYer that came off an '07 Apex.
As LB said ... the case, and all the other reverse components were a direct bolt-on. The caliper got a little tricky. I used my stock brake rotor and caliper (not the Apex stuff), and found that I had to shim the caliper out a bit in order to get it to center on rotor correctly. And I noticed that the caliper is located a bit closer to the rotor ... almost to the point where the OD of the rotor would rub on the caliper. It's close, but it does clear. So everything does work fine.
But later on last season I let a buddy of mine try out my sled, and he didn't notice that the parking brake was on ... and burnt up the pads. So I just removed the parking brake altogther. So if you don't care about the parking brake, you could just leave it off, and not worry about it.

I used a 05 reverse on my 03 and had lots of problems with the e-brake not hooking up, because the 03 rotor is so large. I tapped the mag case and it held for year then stripped out, only fix would be to helicoil the mag case but then the ebrake pads were gone and I just removed it. I used a bolt to hold the brake handle shut and this year I'll probably pop for the $100 pioneer weightless parking brake to make it neater.

apex mountain crracing 174
apex blower 136 for asphalt racing
osp drag race sled (apex engine based)
I did a complete apex engine swap into my rx1.
Then I did the apex jackshaft (to install the new apex disk brake and caliper) and installed apex reverse... everything is perfect bolt on.
My rx1 is a 03 by the way.
And I do not use the stock e-brake... I have the mountain performance brake handle -ebrake.

I did an apex motor install in an 03 rx and the only diff I found was the linkage for the apex is shorter throw to clear the small radiator. I installed the radiator in the rx and had to use the linkage to get it into reverse. I would think going the other way rx to Apex would require using the Apex linkage again to clear the radiator. Now I left the RX case in place because I already had revers.

someone please spell this out more clearly, i am installing a 04 reverse set up on my 03, do i need the caliper, rotor and e-brake off the 04 to make a direct bolt on? is there anything else i am going to need?

my 03 rotor seems to be too large of diameter to work with 04 chaincase
They are all the same size rotors 3,4 & 5

Actually the 04 and 05 rotors are smaller, the 03 is a larger rotor and wont allow you to use the ebrake on a newer cover unless you tap the case in the mouting tabs that are there just not being used.
oops I did a swap out from 03 to 04 and must have moved the whole assembly then
