The Speedo "Joints" A.K.A. 'gears" are all the same. But, you can adjust the speed readout closer than stock by grinding out a lobe on the speedo gear. Some folks actually take out two lobes, but then it reads a little low.

Yamaha speedometers have been way off like that for at least 2 decades. My Apex is as bad as any Yammie I've ever owned.

I have both vector and 2 apexs i belive they are off the same at 100 0n the speedo i would say 15 plus mph. I know for a fact at 157 mph on the speedo they are off 20 mph , also when you grind off the teeth the mph is closer but it then throws off your mileage total. Jeff

The sad part is that recalibrating an electronic speedometer ought to be fairly easy..or at least POSSIBLE...without grinding off gear teeth.

I have seen in several posts now on this subject that if you correct the speedometer that it will cause the odometer to read incorrectly. This would lead me to assume that the odometer is correct from the factory unlike the speedometer.
How can the speedometer be off by 15% or so from the factory but the odometer is correct when they both operate off of the same sending unit? There must be some internal error in the instrument cluster that effects only the speedometer?

i think my odometer is off as well. i understand track spin but riding to the normal places i usually ride, my trip meter was far off from the actual milage that we rode. i forgot to have my friend wuth his 08 f8 reset his before we left to compare. but as soon as we get more snow again i will check this again and post my findings.

when i ride with my buddies cats ,polaris, yamahas, on a 200mile day our odometer all are within a couples of miles . they have never been off the 15 plus % that the speedos are off. Jeff

The speedo works off pulses caused by the gear and pick-up. It is providing a digital signal to the speedo. It is a little harder to adjust/change a digital signal than an analog or mechanical gears. It is not like you can hang a resistor in the circuit to drop the voltage a bit to recalibrate the speedo. And you can not change the gear ratio of a cable's driver. But, ... It does seem like they could get the speedo more accurate. But, then they want to to think you have a really fast sled. So why would they change it.

It goes back much farther than the RX1. All of my Yamaha's over the years have had "dream meters".

Yep, but as soon as it turned electronic, the odometer and seedo differences proved that Yamaha can get it right, but fudge the speed purposely.

I always wondered why my odometer read the same as a buddy's 05 REV odometer. I had assumed that his spedo was out as much as mine. I was going to grind one lug off but I'm actually more interested in how far I've gone, not how fast I'm going at any point in time.

this is why i dont want to grind the teeth as i want more accurate miles ive been to help judge on the fuel milage as well as the gage. it still would be nice if it was w/in 5 mph and not so far off.

I guess that you could grind a tooth off to get an accurate speedometer and also benefit from the lower accumulated mileage.
However you would then have to do a math calculation to determine your accurate miles travelled and your gas mileage.
