Apex will not go into reverse

Over the last 2-3 wks I noticed my Apex ER doesn't go into reverse properly. I hear grinding noises sometimes. ( both when shifting into reverse and once into forward) I adjusted the linkage a few weeks and it seem to work better, but again today it started grinding. I don't know whether this is an adjust problem or something more serious. Can the gears chip or deform so they do not engage. Any advice would be appreciated.

gears grinding noise

had same experience and during first service they did the adjustment and all fine for last 500 miles. they told me nothing to worry about just an adjustment. cheers

The linkage adjustment is critical. I had the same problem on my 04 Rx. Mine was loose from the factory.

You need to set the linkages exactly as the tech manual requires! The demensions are listed and need to be right on. Even the dealer had problems setting it. (He did not follow the book!) After he tried, I got the tech manual, and set it myself. Once it was set, I have 5000 miles on it with no further problems or adjustments.

I had the same problem on my XT from day 1 and had it back to the dealer many times for adjustment ! Finally one day I opened the hood shifted gears and saw the linkage was jumping up in the notch under torque as soon as I gave it throttle so, I moved the spring holding the linkage in the notch to a position that put more down pressure and problem was solved after 4 years ! You could add another spring or a stiffer one and try it ?

The linkage is different and so this is not applicable. There's no chance of it "jumping" on this model.

I looked in the supplimental service manual and do not see a procedure on this. Can you give me more guidance?
