Asphalt Results "2008"

Thought I'd update you guys on what happened late Sunday @ ESTA.

From our Canadian contingent, we had 4 guys in the top 10 (2 on each side of the ladder). Scott & I and raced off, and John drew Richard.

My sled had been running very consistant and with no cars now on the track, I knew the 60fts 'should' fall off. They had been spectacular all day... running either 1.33 or 1.34's. Times in the 1/8th were 6.51 or 6.52, and the quarter had come in around 10.64 to 10.67 @ 115.

With the humidity up 20%, and temp down just a few degrees, I decided to dial a 10.66... being preparded to brake at the end. Scott has sand bagged before or run NOS to fender me, so I figured I'd dial what could be a breakout time. The 60ft was a 1.35, and the 1/8 mile time was a 6.48 @ 99. (Note: This sled had never run a sub 6.50 run... even with my 1/8th mile gearing at home). I was hard on the brakes through the 1/4... but I left my breaking too late. Sled still ran a 10.64 at 111. More than a little pissed. Nice thing was both of us cut great lights... mine a .52 and Scott's a .53. Scott ran a 9.93 on a 9.90 dial.

Scott had a bye into the semi final, then lost... otherwise he would have met John Chatwood in the final... as John had progressed up through the other side of the ladder. John won the whole thing on a red light. For those of you who were attending 2 years ago... he was the one with the Polaris wheel sled that ran a exhibition pass. Great guy... been racing forever.

Wayne... drop me an update when you have time. I have been thinking about you. With my sled working so well... was contemplating NOS. I may just keep on thinking....

Jeff-
You've got that sled working very well. Makes me want to try those weights even more. You're proving a lot of people wrong who say you can't 60' with a pro-action skid. My day ended similar to yours, just much earlier. Dial a 10.90, cut a .53 light, I'm ahead all the way, just ahead at the finish, and lose on a double breakout with a 10.88. We had a good time anyway. I was pleased with my times for the first time out this year.

Wayne-
Good luck. Let us know what happened.

Understand totally Corey...

Sounds like you and I need just need more HP. HP=mph, and damn those closing rates are fast when racing a 9 second sled (and there were a lot of them).

Anyone planning on going to the Martin event?

Jeff sounds like you have the sled running great!

I have it 'scheduled' on my calendar. None of our immediate group has committed to going... so this will have to be a last minute deal. Couple guys about an hour north went last year and said they would 'definitely' be going back. They had a great time last year. Incredible facilities, track & sleds.

As far as my sled... was very pleased with the progress @ ESTA. Other years I was stock (other than gearing, clutching & K&N's). This time around I slipped a bike exhaust on the sled. Just a Two Brothers unit the dealer had lying around. Stock exhaust was in the trailer just in case. Didn't think there was any HP on top as PM's were the same as Pinks 'Arm Drop' at Cayuga. However, I was able to add a little in the heel... plus loose a little weight. That combined with some good track prep really seemed to bring the 60ft and clutching around. More in it yet... especially on a great track with decent air... which is why I'd like to make the trip to Martin.

Will let you know Allen as the date gets closer...

I haven't even pulled my sled out of the trailer yet. I'm guessing I popped the motor due to excessive nitrous and not enough gas. I was running 112 octane mixed with a little 93 so I don't think octane was the problem. I had my nitrous kit set up for the very max amount of nitrous that I could get through my boondocker system due to some mods I made to it. I was "guessing" how much of a shot I had and probably guessed too low. In hindsite, I may have been spraying around 100 - 105 hp worth of nitrous but had my fuel set for about 80-85 hp worth of nitrous. On the previous run before I blew it up, I gained 1600 rpm on the juice and was hitting my rev-limiter. So, I may have gained 1700 or 1800 rpm...who knows. I just know that that is a huge shot. Before my last run, I added some clutch weight to stay off the limiter and mistakenly reduced my fuel by about 5 hp when I should have increased by probably 20.

I was revving 9600 max on my "non-nitrous" runs and then when I finally got it working, I was bouncing off the rev limiter at 11,200 rpm.

I spoke with Ernie and he wants to buy my sled off me as is. I will have an answer for him later this week but I'm due for a new sled anyhow.

Jeff, I wouldn't worry about running nitrous. I never had any problem when I was running a 50 shot. I had my problems when I tried to get greedy and did a lot of guessing without any air/fuel gauge to tell me where I was at.

What ever sled I buy, I'm still gonna hit it with a "smaller" shot of N2O.

stoutner - Sorry to hear about you misfortune.
I hope you also spend some money on a WBO2 to run in your new sled. It's mandatory, you know it :)

The funniest part of that is...I have had a brand new Wide Band Air Fuel Gauge kit sitting in my tool box for about 3 months. Never got around to installing it :(

Well boys where are all the results, srxspec Allen did you ever get yours out to the track? Canapex, where did you go I haven’t seen you out at the track the last couple of weeks out? Last weekend I had the only sled out at our local track, but then it was hot and there were not that many cars either. I think a lot has to do with gas prices and entry fees have gone up in the last couple of years. I myself have been on a reduce schedule due to cost, I haven’t been running test & tune. Last Saturday there were only 24 vehicles that were testing and tunning.

As for results, I haven’t been very lucky so far this year, I’m lagging behind in points and felt good about getting somewhere last Sunday but my reaction was just as little bit better than good and I red lighted first round by 4 hundredths’ of a second after I had adjusted the delay box due to red lighting in time trials. I think the quicker reaction had something to do with the lack of beers, as I only had two on Saturday and usually I have a few more than that, lol.

I was sitting in 9th place and stayed there, so that’s not too bad. Just the top guys moved around. A few more meets left, but I won’t be putting the turbo on the tar this year due to lack of time and trying to move up in the points. Well I know of a couple of sledders that are going to try and make it out in the next couple of meets, hopefully they show. Jim??????

Well, here are the standings for our local track as of August 18th. Although my buddy with the big cat is faster than my sled, he is sitting in 13th place where I sit in 9th. We'll see after this weekend, hopefully I'll be a little closer to the top.

Well, we’re done for the year, I ended up losing in the first round on Sunday. Snoozed mid track, I thought the guy broke at the line, he was dialed about a second faster than me and I heard his car sputter or something and by the 1/8th mile he still was nowhere in site and I relaxed a little too much and he blew by me at the finish line. Turns out he was running a throttle stop which was the engine sound I heard, which means the car runs a lot faster than 9.5 and pulls hard at the end, where my sled doesn’t. I was hoping he snoozed at the line and would have broken out but I wasn’t that lucky.
As it ends up, I dropped from 8th place to 9th and my buddy made it to the quarter finals and moved up to 11th place. Had he made it to final and won he would have been right behind me. Well there’s always next year. All those years of racing and I mess up like that!!!!!!!
