Axle Snapped in Half

How do you guys think ski -don't will hold up? I understand they made the shaft hollow

Snapped my axel last week 6400 mi, also had to replace the donuts in the exhaust #$%&*

Same here! Snapped the axel at 6500 mi. and so far replace full exhaust once and 2 front pipes + donuts.

geez...thats concerning...
someone needs to come up with a stronger axle fix...
I bet it's a PITA to change out the full exhaust

I did let the dealer do it! I think it took him 3 hours. Hopefully the driveshaft will last longer this time. I'm coming around to 13k miles!

The hollow, hydroformed drive axles that polaris and skidoo are using are actually quite a bit stronger than the smaller solid, heavier ones that yamaha is using.

It also happened to a buddy of mine with his 06 Apex ER. It went at around 5000-6000 miles.

I don't think he noticed anything until he came out of a corner fast, hit the throttle and it didn't accelerate. The not so fun part was he was now sailing down the trail at 60+ mph with no brakes and a sharp corner coming up.

He made it safely around the corner and to a stop, but it really bugs me that sleds have these links (drive shaft & chain) that can fail at high speed leaving a sled without brakes.

Looking at the break it was a fatigue failure that had occured over a fairly long time. Something like 60% of the cross section of the shaft was rusted.

This really bugs me. People always make comments about Doo's motors well they probably all sit over their and talk about our skids and drive axles. It is hard to get to the first valve adjustment if the track won't spin :o| :o| :o| :o| :o| :o| :o| :o| :o| :o|

By the way everyone enjoy your weekend on some of the best conditions we have had in a VERY long time as I start to go over a week without my sled now.

Don't worry I am not bitter at all :o|

Sled reliablility is conducive to storage conditions and prevenative maintainence.

A fatigue failure of the drive axle has nothing to do with storage nor preventative maintenance.

It is related to how hard the sled is driven and mileage, but theoretically the drive axle should be designed so that it doesn't break with a stock sled.

I wonder if Yamaha wil have a recall on this? When a part fails that leads to loss of control (no brakes) somebody is going to die,and thats not good.

AGREED!

vibration

I have 3900 miles on 06 Attak. I have had studs installed since new. Some of the base plates hit my idler wheels. It seems as though I have a vibration compared to other Attaks I've ridden without studs. I am wondering if its the studs or driveshaft, and how would I be able to tell the difference without removing all of my studs and the run the machine ??????? Thanks for any insight.
